Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

Cautionary tales like that, from people who have more experience than I ever will, make me really stop and take stock. A few years ago, after the birth of my first son, I quit my career as a helicopter pilot because I considered the risks involved and didn't much like the odds. Not long after...

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I did get a Whitehill Euro block with the moulder but there's only half a dozen sets of knives for it, as opposed to over a hundred that fit in the old Whitehill steel blocks. The lure of all those profiles was pretty tempting to try but I am thinking that I'll...

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

I dread to think how fast a knife would hurl itself through the air if it was unleashed from a 6" block doing 4800RPM. It's not hard to see why the new cutters have holes or serrations. Thankfully I don't have any of the 'howling banshees' but I do have a few Whitehill blocks. Should the knives...

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

 Can't argue with that Jacob. Is the main safety issue the fact that there is no limiter and could therefor take giant chunks out of your hands, or is it more about the potential for the knife to kick the work back as there is only one cut per revolution?

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

Aah. That would make sense. Some of the cutters I have seem to have 3 or 4 different profiles ground on different edges. I suppose it is a good idea in theory and a great way to amass a huge collection of profiles cheaply, it's just the safety aspect that is concerning.

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

Ok, doable but really not advisable, thank you for the information. In the interests of keeping all the limbs I was born with I think I'll stick to modern gear and proceed very gingerly. I bought the moulder mostly for tenoning and rebating but the sheer quantity of profiled knives that...

Spindle Moulder Tooling - Single Knife?

I have just purchased my first spindle moulder, a second hand Kity 1629, and it arrived with a load of tooling and knives. I have sorted through them all and there are dozens of knives which have no matching knife, ie not a pair. I am not about to mount a single knife in a block and spin it up...

    Cut Nails

Do you have a really old hardware shop anywhere nearby? I seem to remember seeing cut nails in my local hardware shop a few months back. Stepping in there is like going back in history. Next time I'm in town I'll have a look and see what they have.

    Another timber identity please

As Mar_mite says is looks like meranti or some other "mahogany substitute". There are many similar species available in the UK but most is just sold as meranti (especially if bought from the likes of Jewsons, TP etc.).

    Paul Sellers makes a spoon

I really quite like Paul Sellers but the first time I saw one of his videos I thought he was a new Peter Kay character and he was going to start losing limbs or worse! :D

    Japanese Chisels

I have had a few Japanese chisels for years and despite having "replaced" them with a set LN bench chisels I can't bring myself to part with my Japanese chisels. I can't tell you what it is but sometimes I'll just instinctively reach for a Japanese chisel because I know it will work better in...

    Kity 619 Riving Knife

I have both. I have a 270mm ripping blade and various other blades, all of which are 250mm. My previous table saw had a RK that was adjustable for different blade diameters by having an elongated mounting hole it allowed the angle and position of the knife to be adjusted to suit the blade. I...

    Kity 619 Riving Knife

 I had interpreted CC blade as cross cut blade  I couldn't work out why a rip blade wouldn't work just as well though  OK, so it looks like I have a fair bit of metal butchering ahead of me if I have to make two riving knives. Obviously the easy way is to go and spend a...

    Kity 619 Riving Knife

I have a few blades with the thickest being 3mm kerf / 2.15 plate and the thinnest at 2.5mm kerf / 1.8mm plate. Is it worth making two riving knives, one for thin kerf and one for standard blades?

    Sourcing Kity 5 spares.

I recently contacted NMA for some spares for my old Kity 619. They couldn't have been more helpful. They had all the exploded diagrams to hand so they quickly knew which parts I was describing. Most of the parts I needed were in stock but one wasn't. That one I was told could be obtained (from...

    kity 618

Yeah, I think I'll look at modifying an Incra to suit the Kity and put the idea of filing/milling out the slots on the back-burner. Machining an aluminium runner shouldn't be to tricky and if I make a few at the same time I can avoid the pain of having to do it again when the first one wears and...

    kity 618

That sled does look very nice indeed, I could be tempted to build one of those when I get the time. If a chap was feeling so inclined to open up the slots on his table saw's top to the accommodate a standard mitre gauge does anyone know how he might go about it? Would it need to be done on a...

    Can you identify this wood

Teak gets my vote. Looks just like a cabinet my parents used to have :)

    Tablesaw blades

I would probably stick with 10'' blades. There is a much greater variety of blades available in that size. My saw will take a 270mm blade but when I looked into it there was a very limited choice. I use 4 or 5 different blades and I could only find a couple of them in the 270mm size. I have a...
