    Technical term please?

Aha! Maybe you're right. Not that big though - I'm thinking of about 5mm. I'll re-google, thanks.

    Technical term please?

Hello. Can someone help me with the proper name for threaded rod? I don't mean the cheap studding stuff (useful though that is), but with a standard gear profile on the threading, to accurately mesh with a gear that rotates or moves as the rod is spun. Not a worm gear - longer, thinner, and no...

    Painting hardboard...

Hi - yes, I've got plenty of offcuts, about half of it, unfort :) . I can try that primer - what is it? "Untempered"? Que? I fear the hardboard might absorb water more easily than oil. I was thinking maybe some cheap spray lacquer, but doubt if the paint would stick to it. I can experiment...

    Painting hardboard...

Yes, I'm afraid so! Not up to the usual level of fine finishes here, but still.. I want to paint some cupboard door panels, of new hardboard, the smooth side, with water-based emulsion paint. I don't want the hardboard to fluff up when it absorbs the paint, or indeed ever. Should I seal it...

    Broomstick - what wood?

It does look a bit like bamboo at the end... I didn't know you could get it compressed! How does that work? Is it resinated to stop it flaking apart? It's very cheap, though..

    Broomstick - what wood?

Hi - just an ordinary cheap broom handle, but it seems it's made from a pretty hard wood. You can't put a screw in, even into the end grain, without a good-sized pilot hole. I'm just wondering what kind of wood it might be. Enc a pic, if it means anything to anybody. Thank-you as usual! Graham...

    Decent hex bits?

Thanks, yes, I've learned to tell posi's from philips by the extra little grooves. I don't know if they actually do anything. The angle of the "cone" going down into the screw head is different too, but you can't tell that by eye, of course. Apparently the philips ones were deliberately...

    Decent hex bits?

Hi - You know the little hex driver bits you find for not much in any hardware/tool shop? I've found they're generally not that strong and, on small posi screws especially, the useful end tends to get circularised. Can anyone recommend any really good, almost indestructible ones? Thank-you,

    Finishing Danish Oil

Hi all. I've put 2 coats of Danish Oil on a table. 2 more to go. The can says, "For a superior finish, put the last coat on with a plastic scouring pad" Anyone know anything about that? How long should I leave it before waxing? Thanks,

    Challenge Extreme PD1710S drill chuck

What a hassle! Tried to drill out that retaining screw, and because it was indeed a reverse thread, it eventually came out, without too much damage. Bushing was well oversize. Made another one out of nylon. Seems ok so far..

    Challenge Extreme PD1710S drill chuck

Ok, maybe I can knock the big cog off somehow, and get the bush off that way. Not sure what I'll be achieving though. It's crazy, imho, for a tool that's fine in every other respect to have to be thrown away because of (I think) a worn bush. Still, who knows, it might be a standard item. <Not...

    Challenge Extreme PD1710S drill chuck

@Cedarwood: I thought so, but if it's a screw, it's a funny one! (pic) The square "hole" is tiny, about 1 or 1.5mm.

    Challenge Extreme PD1710S drill chuck

Hi - pls see the enc pic. The chuck is inscribed 1.5-13mm Bried 1/2-20UNF I've had the drill a few years, and it's always been good, especially for the price (Argos £9.95!). Now the drill bit wobbles about 1/8" back and forth, though when it's actually in a hole it steadies. The prob seems to...

Thank-you, all. I'm wondering if bandsaw blades these days ever need that treatment....

Rod - Ok, that's pretty er clear? :) Any chance of the link? PS: I was way off!

How many times to knock back?

Hi - I've sanded an oak piece down, wiped it with a damp cloth to raise the grain, let it dry, sanded it down again... How many more times if any should I repeat that? Until the grain stops rising? Thank-you.

    CA glue issue

Hi - I tried CA (super-) glue on a small 1/2" diameter piece of walnut on the lathe, and it worked very well with just one coat. But on a larger piece, it soaked in in places, dried too quickly in others, and generally made a mess which had to be sanded off. An "accelerator" is often recommended...
