    Starter chisel set

Next time.you see a new Stanley chisel, check it with a vernier caliper.. I bought 4 new, about 5 years ago and all of them over sized... the 10mm was infact 10.7, "made in england with material sourced from around the world" In other words assemble in.. but made in china. My previous set, I...

What type of chestnut is this?

The pictures above show extensive fungal invasion and the wet patches are the beginnings of fungal rot. I work with chestnut almost every day, a beautiful wood with lots of character. The pictured slab sawn, although structurally useless, is perfectly good for small non load bearing furniture...

    Blocking mice?

A mouse can deform and reform its skeletal structure instantly, needing a hole no bigger than the tip of your little finger to get into your house. They are also opportunistic, if there is a hole they will investigate but not necessarily dig one. They leave urine trails for other mice to follow...

Sad story of my uneven bench top

My work bench is 5mtr long (17 feet, there about.) Made from 50 x 250mm rough sawn pine frame with 18mm plywood top. It has less than 0.5mm deviation end to end, and I make accurate joinery. Work benches are made for work... This nonsense you see on YouTube is more suited for your dining...

Wood moisture meter for firewood logs - any recommendations?

If it stays wet it will rot and attract more beetle and worm infestations. That quantity of timber (particularly ash) will need to be covered but well ventilated, dont stack it so tight that air cannot permeate.

    Gap filling adhesive advice

Wood glue will not dry in a confined space.... If there is a gap in the wood it will fill with wood glue and skin off, like putting the top back on the glue pot , it will remain wet. If you need to fill gaps, and you need strength use cascamite wood adhesive, and dowel/mortise the repair.

    Bringing goods from the EU

If it is true!!!! Really!!! Even goods labelled "made in england" "made in europe" are done so by Chinese companies that have set up companies in the UK and or Europe... The east does not need to go to war... It simply has to own your economy.. The job is already done. Perhaps an insight would...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I made this chest, quite large, because my wife needs a place to store my grandchildren's toys. Now I get great pleasure watching my 2.5 year old grand daughter climbing on the front trying to reach in and get stuff out... she almost falls in herself.. Made from chestnut, ash and mahogany. The...

    Parkside tools

Your warranty is valid only in country of purchase... I have said before, to buy cheap is to buy expensive in the first place. Keep the tooling that you know to be working well and grow on that as you can afford it. I have a new parkside pedestal drill that worked very little until stripping the...

How not to operate a miter saw

I couldnt agree more, I am 64 years and have used radial arm saws all my life, I have one in my workshop that I use all the time. My table saw is almost redundant. "To each their own" I served my apprenticeship from 15 years old on radial arm saws, they are the most amazingly versatile machines...
