I would assume this would be covered under the Party Wall Act and your friends' neighbour should have informed all parties affected? Brian

    Wadkin Planer/Jointer restoration project

I thought a 'jointer' differed from a 'surface planer' in terms of the former's ability to cut joints such as tenons - the reason for the short side extension on the infeed table (such as you see on this model) and the greater depth of cut. The Wadkin above doesn't have that so I would say it...

    Best Wood for Carving?

Hi Chems The wood of choice for carving is Lime (Tilia spp). It has a very consistent, but bland grain, unlike mahogany. Brian

    Planer/Thicknesser advice needed

Hi Woody Forget the Whisperer - it's degenerated into a series of long commercials. Have a look at this video. The rest of the series is also worth looking at as well. Brian

    Planer/Thicknesser advice needed

Hi Woody Planer/thicknessers both remove wood but the difference is in how they are used. Planers (more correctly, surface planers (jointers in US)) are used to produce a flat surface on a face of the wood. The wood is passed over the cutter block and across the outfeed table which, being...

    Xcaliber

Hi Olly You're probably right but there's always that niggling doubt! My concern at the moment is machinery weight. I'm about to move into a small second floor unit where there is a restriction on the floor loading so I'm looking for a compromise between practicality and need and I'd prefer a...

    Xcaliber

Hi Roy Maybe you can get one and tell me what it's like then? I'm going down the separate jointer-thicknesser route at the moment but can't decide whether a 6" capacity will suffice (thinking Fox or Axminster CI jointer). It most likely will but there will always be that job that call for...

    Xcaliber

I enquired about it a few weeks back but haven't decided yet. I didn't notice the delivery cost but it's only £30 more than Axminster charge for delivery so you'd still be £100 better off? With rising fuel costs I think many companies will be forced to up their carriage rates soon? Brian

Visits to my Dorset Custom Furniture Weblog

Hi Dan I spent a long time looking at your website for the simple reason that you have a lot of good stuff to see. I also like the blog as it's good to see a bit of the design and construction that goes into a piece of custom furniture. As Dave says, we are an inquisitive bunch so I'm sure you...

Bloke making an heirloom quality bombe secretary on podcast

I've been watching it from the start and I like the style. It's warts'n'all and I like the way he deals with his mistakes - just do it again. It makes a change to some of the more polished (and sterile) woodworking shows out there. What's even better is the fact it's not being done to try to...

Router Confusion - Another which router thread...

I've never used it freehand as it's been in my router table since I bought it but for the money (£60) I would highly recommend this from Screwfix. It comes with 1/4" and 1/2" collets and is powerful enough for table work. Brian

Which 1/2 Router for Table Use?

I've had the Erbauer in my table for the last year from Screwfix and for the money it's been superb. Bit of a hassle getting the springs out but would recommend it for the built-in micro-adjust. Brian

    Calculations!!

    volume = length x cross section (bxh) so length = volume/cross section 1 cu ft (12 x 12 x 12) as 6 x 1 = 1/(0.5 x 0.833) = 24 linear ft easier in inches (1 cu ft = 1728 cu in) 1 cu ft as 6 x 1 = 1728/(6 x 1) = 288 in = 24 linear ft Hope this helps? Brian
