    Shepherds huts

Some very helpful suggestions here. Mark, sounds like you have an interesting business! I suppose now I need to have a think to check that I am really serious about this, but it certainly seems it wii be do-able without too much trouble if I decide to go for it. Thanks all!

    Shepherds huts

I'm thinking of making a shepherds hut to use as an office. Anyone here made one? Any suggestions for sources of wheels, axles, and other chassis components? Preferably near Sussex. Thanks.

    Something Fishy

Hi cerdeira, the desk top is hinged and just folds down, simple but effective. The barley twists were cut by hand — you turn a cylinder on the lathe, then cut a spiral line with a hand saw about 1cm deep. After that you can remove the rough waste with a chisel (making sure to always work with...

    Which end vice?

Often is though, when you can afford it! I agree you don't need to have an expensive end vise, but if I could justify it it (I can't!) I would love to have one of those Maguire ones, for several reasons....

    Which end vice?

Just to throw a completely irrelevant recommendation your way (sorry!) I would get one of these! http://www.maguireworkbenches.com/html/tail_vice.html

Advice please! Should I purchase a CNC Router?

Interesting, I have just got 3 quotes for CNC cutting 1200 small rectangles from thin mdf (for my partners bookbinding business, not for me). The lowest price was £250, the next was £600, the highest was £2000!!

    Something Fishy

Thanks chaps, can't deny I'm quite chuffed with this one. It's funny though, but whenever I finish a piece, no matter whether it has turned out well or badly, I always go through a phase of disillusionment, thinking that it's an awful lot of work and stress to produce what is, at the end of the...

    Something Fishy

I've been working on this on and off for a year. It's a writing bureau in oak and sycamore with elm and boxwood marquetry. It's in an antique style, which is unusual for me. I fancied doing something different. Everything is done the old way apart from the initial timber prep. All veneer...

    Farmhouse Table Top Finish

I haven't tried Blanchon's, but I would have thought that any oil will darken wood. Would be very surprised if Blanchon's is different in this respect to Osmo or any other finishing oil. Have you tried it, or are you going on what it says on the tin? If the later, I think you may be...

What do you use as a 'gripper', with your planer or jointer

According to HSE: They suggest use of a pusher blocks only for small pieces, but there is a good picture on their fact sheet here: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/wis17.pdf Re. gloves, I was always told that any kind of gloves on any kind of machine is a complete no no, is that wrong?

    Bathroom Unit

I would have thought so, yes, but then I didn't put the basin there! Clients, you've got to love em!

Should add, the central post was there already — a gift from building regs, nothing to do with me!

    Bathroom Unit

Finished fitting this yesterday. Nothing special but I'm quite pleased with it. The basin had already been fitted, and I wasn't allowed to remove it (long story), so I had to build the unit round the basin. Not the best way to approach things, but it turned out OK in the end....

    how long to acclimatise wood

Which is why you need a moisture meter  If its only 13mm thick it should be fine in a week or two if it is not too damp, and nice and toasty in the house, but a meter would take the guess work out.

    veneer Press stuff

+1 to that, I use one too for small things, much less bother if that's as big as you need.

Thanks, I don't think mine have a shoulder, the felt tip trick is excellent though!

Joining veneered sheets end to end?

Finger joints is the only way I know of that looks OK, PITA to cut by hand but can be done. If you have a lot to do might be worth seeing if you have a commercial veneering outfit near you that could do it on their machines.
