WIP — Traditional Screw Veneer Press

This week I've started working in earnest on my new veneer press. It's going to be of the traditional type with lots of hand screws, and I thought I would do a WIP as there's not that much info about this on the web and it will hopefully be useful to someone. I'm departing from tradition in...

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

Thanks for replies, taken me a while to read them as I had noro-virus then Christmas to content with. Christmas was worse :D I've not done any hot sand veneering yet, but have a project coming up which will need it, another learning curve..... I've decided to go with Patrick Edward's...

    Axminster price increases?

As well as prices going up I've had quite a few irritations with them lately. Lots of things being out of stock (hardly ever used to happen), wrong things delivered, out of date finishes delivered. They used to be flawless, but are loosing it a little bit recently if my experience is anything...

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

I'm being quoted about £450 for a suitable heat mat (size 900 x 600) with a control unit. Would probably be a good solution, but a bit too much for me right now. The plates need to be quite toasty. When I've done it before I've put them in the oven at 120 and need to handle them with cloths...

Maybe I won't be buying mortice chisels...

I was referring more to Seller's own work than to his student's.... I have mixed feelings about old Jim as well. I can't agree that he had poor craft skills, although I agree he worked within quite a narrow range. But the pieces were built to a high standard and the work involved in, say, the...

Maybe I won't be buying mortice chisels...

I'm never quite sure what I think of Paul Seller's approach. On the one hand he's clearly a master at the nuts and bolts of hand tool use (as he should be after 45 years!). His methods on the whole are very efficient and well thought through. On the other hand I've never seen a picture of...

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

Don't know yet! Gloves I expect. Though in reality I expect I will end up using the kerosene heater method which can be done at the edge of the press and then you jut slide it on. Also I am planning to use three smaller sheets rather than one big one so not quite as big. I'd love to try it the...

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

Yup, so long as you don't mind it a) creeping [2 or 3mm thick veneer] b) completely devaluing clients antique furniture and c) being completely irrepairable if something goes wrong during glue up or after, having just spent two weeks cutting and fitting marquetry....

Maybe I won't be buying mortice chisels...

You can cut perfectly good mortises happily with either. If you cut more than a few (particularly deep ones in hardwood) and you own a nice set of delicate BE chisels, then it makes sense to have some mortice chisels too, because you are risking damage your BE ones if you mortice with them a lot...

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

Thanks for this Andy, interesting but rather like the stuff I found myself - a few clues but short on the detail about how it's done with really big plates. Perhaps they had massive fireplaces.... I have an area of concrete outside at the back of the workshop, so if i have a go will be there...

    Air filter replacement interval

Thanks for all your comments. I think three years is enough, I've ordered another set! Probably time I took this stuff a bit more seriously - not that I'm totally blasé about it, but its easy to get complacent. Turning 40 brings things home a bit. Apparently I'm no longer immortal

    Shavings fires (intentional!)

I'm building a big traditional veneer press at the moment, and am starting to think about how to heat the aluminium plates (for the hide glue). I've done quite a bit of this sort of veneering on a smaller scale with plates that fit in the oven, but these plates will need to be a lot bigger (the...

    Air filter replacement interval

I have a Jet air filter, which I bought about three years ago. I give both filters a good vacuum every week, and it still seems to work OK. They look fine, nice and clean, but do they become less efficient over time? Should I replace them now and again? Or can I assume that if they still...
