New season of Woodwright's shop now coming on line

Andy, thanks that. That's my evening sorted.

    Switch problem on my lathe

I got a friendly neighbourhood sparky to have a look yesterday and, praise be, he sorted the problem by bypassing the switch, telling which one to buy (a DOL suitable for 240v) and he will be coming back to fit the new one at the weekend. That means I've managed to finish the turning I urgently...

    Switch problem on my lathe

Cedar wood, thanks for that, but I've already taken the switch apart and cleaned it and it hasn't sorted the issue. It may well be dust, but I can't clean it further than I have and it's shorting, so will need replacing I think.

    Switch problem on my lathe

Good afternoon, I'm after a bit of advice. I have an Apollo professional lathe with an inverter that has a separate on/off switch with a solenoid inside. This takes power from the 240v wall socket and then feeds it to the inverter (I think). For a day or so, the lathe would just switch off...

    Another Moxon Vice Build

Excellent and I can now see why your design is an improvement over the original.

    Another Moxon Vice Build

Looks excellent mate and thanks for the explanation. Look forward to the pics.

    Another Moxon Vice Build

It looks really good, but I'm struggling to understand the reasons for the joinery? Your work looks to be excellent, but the Moxon I built is just two pieces (well, slabs really) of beech with a strip of oak along the rear face to clamp it to the bench. I'm not saying yours isn't miles better...

    Interview with the Local Authority

You're welcome. Perhaps ring their HR and ask for it. It can't hurt and at worst, lets them know you're taking it seriously.

    Interview with the Local Authority

Sorry Adam, I did reply to your question, but it seems to have disappeared. Yes, the Human Rights Act, which is the bit of British legislation which enshrines the European Convention on Human Rights into our law. All public authority (and anyone acting on their behalf) must act in accordance...

    Interview with the Local Authority

In all public service jobs, the HRA governs everything we do, so it may be worth casting your eye over that, I would think Right to Private/family Life may apply to your job. Also, knowing a bit about the 9 strands of diversity isn't a bad idea either, although I'm not saying I have any...

    Not a post about sharpening...

Mult - a rare material only found on the northern slopes of the Himalayas and prized for its ability to give perfectly formed bevels every time. Believed to be formed from the fossilised remains of sawdust and Yak dung left on the workshop floors of ancient Nepalese carpenters.

    Not a post about sharpening...

Well ok, it is a bit. But it is not, and let me clear about this, a post where anyone is allowed to argue or disparage different sharpening methods, on pain of severe Moderator displeasure (hammer) (hammer) (hammer) With that caveat, the below is a link to a PDF document hosted by Lost...

    Small workshops

4 metres by 5 metres, which I work out as about 215 square feet. I thought it was huge when I started with just my big lathe, a couple of grinders and a load of donated wood, but my wise old woodworking mentor smiled wryly and told me that I would soon be rearranging it to get more space and he...

Bench Grinder and Axminsters sharpening system combo

I can't help with the grinder, but I used the Axi jig for a couple of years. It works fine, but I have now upgraded to the Wolverine system from Oneway, which is around £110 for the bases, platform and gouge jig. For me, it's much better for not that much more money. The main difference is the...
