    Timber merchant North West

I am thinking of making my own workbench and was wondering where would be best in the North West to source hardwood timbers? The local merchants that know of only have softwoods.

Did you get a lathe in the end? You're still welcome to come and have a play on mine if you want to and I go to a club in Hawarden every second Tues of you ever want to come along for a look.

    Beginner needs help

Welcome fingerjoint...+1 for Keith Rowley's book. Also, get yourself along to a turning club. I my view, that's the most cost-effective way of improving. Nt only will you get free tuition (once your membership is paid, which is generally very reasonable), but you can try out new tools before...

    Xmas craft fairs

I saw turned Xmas trees in a Woodturning mag last year as decorations which should be simple and eye catching.

    Serious Woodies!

Jimi, I feel bad for you having to store all those planes. They look like they take a lot of looking after, your insurance must be through the roof and I would be prepared, for you, to sacrifice some of the space in my cabin and some of my time to make sure that they get the attention they...

    TREND AIRACE AIRSHIELD HALF MASK

I've got the Trend air shield pro and it is absolutely superb. It gives good dust protection and the battery lasts for the 8 hrs they say it will. Some say it's heavy, but I've used it since the beginning, so it seems normal to me. It has the added benefit of full face protection as well.

    Sheet Materials for Benchtop

There was a video for a fantastic self-assembly bench from an American wood worker which broke down into manageable sections but was large and sturdy when assembled. I'll have a look and see if I can find it.

Can anyone explain what shear scraping is?

I've used (and am about to purchase) the Tracey Owen fine finishing tools which are shear scrapers par excellence. I find them superb to use as they are so easy to control and they work inside and outside the bowl. I never got on with flat scrapers really, finding them difficult to control, but...

    Finish over acrylic paint

Cheers Twothumbs. I ended up using an acrylic Matt lacquer from Chestnut which worked brilliantly. Acrylic definitely needs some practice and I did have to thin it a bit with water, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

    wood carving gouge

Have you got access to a Tormek? That should make it easy to set it up with the angle you want and then perhaps your stones/hones will keep it there. You're welcome to nip along the M62 and borrow mine if you want. I'd have to check I've got the right jig first (if not, I probably know a man...

    Finish over acrylic paint

Good morning all, I am just finishing a couple of plywood items for my niece's birthday and I have painted them with acrylic paint, cutting back between coats. One of them is a name plate for her door, which will not be handled much, but the other is a name jigsaw and I was thinking that this...

what to expect at a woodturning club?

Nev, at my club in North Wales we meet every other Tuesday and there are always half a dozen lathes out, at least. There will usually be a few members making their own thing, whilst people watch and ask questions and then a senior member (to be fair, most people are senior there ;) ) will often...

    First lathe attempts

I started with an oval skew and found it ok for planing cuts, but nothing else. Then I tried one of these; http://www.axminster.co.uk/henry-taylor-henry-taylor-skew-chisels-prod22361/ For me, this is much easier because of the extra weight (less flex) and also there is more support on the...

    Air Filtration System

The microclene range are well thought of and do actually work. Other brands are available, but this is only one I have seen used and I've got the 1000, which serves my 5x4m workshop very well. There's a good guide here...

    Can you decode this price?

Well, this brings out the detective in me (which, to be fair isn't that hard)...I haven't got any answers, but I would say this; -Plough is definitely right. -I was wondering if the 's' on the next line could be dollar, but when I opened the picture, I think it is fairly clear that the top part...
