    Which chisels to buy?

I've got a set of four you can have for the budget price of £75 quid (or will swap for a LN smoothing plane) ;)

    What's your favourite wood?????

    Spalted beech I think.

    Which chisels to buy?

Just got a set of four (decent-looking at least) Footprint b/e chisels from Gumtree for £15...I'll let you know how they when they arrive.

    Which chisels to buy?

I think I'm pretty good at sharpening (chisels at least). They always cut the hairs on my forearm, having been sharpened and honed on a Tormek, they just lose their edge really quickly, which Is only to be expected I think for a cheap set. Now, I love the idea of picking up old chisels and I...

I'll be there Saturday...what's on everyone's list (must have, or might have)?

    Which chisels to buy?

Cheers all, so a set of Ashley Iles bevel-edge it is then. Anyone got any in a drawer they don't want? ;) I think I narrowly missed out on a set of exactly that with Marvin's recent clear out. Thanks for all your help.

    Which chisels to buy?

I forgot to ask...I have read the definitions of firmer, bevel-edge, mortise etc, but I'm not sure which of these to go for. Eventually, I imagine I'll end with a few different sets, but which kind will start me on the way without causing me to want to launch the chisels out of the window (a lá...

    Which chisels to buy?

Ok, so I'm off to Harrogate this Saturday and one of the things I'll be looking for is a new set of chisels. I've got a twenty quid set of B and Q specials, which are fine for removing a lot of wood quickly and roughly, but need a hammer accompaniment about thirty seconds after each sharpen. I...

    Drill tidy

Doug, simple, effective idea and very well executed. That's definitely on my list of things to do, thanks.

    Noob disaster recovery

Can you dismantle it still? If you can, then you can remount the spindles and turn away all of the grooves. If not, I'm really not sure...chisel out the bands followed by pulling a strip of sandpaper to round it off again perhaps??

    dust protection for hardwoods

I've got the Trend Airshield Pro. It's not cheap (around £180 I think) but gives excellent protection. I can really tell the difference in my nose and lungs when I wear it (compared to when I do not) for turning and sanding. Some people say they find it heavy, but personally I don't, but then...

    Help with tools please

Roxy, welcome to the forum, it s a lovely idea what you suggest, but to be honest, I wouldn't do it. Most turners I have met have lots of turning tools, many of which end up redundant and the ones you get in sets tend not to be the best quality, unless you go for a very high end one (which...

Recommend me a budget bandsaw please!

Yes, but who needs to cook if you've got a decent bandsaw to play with? ;) Check out Tuffsaws for your blades...very highly regarded and excellent customer service.

    which lathe??

Dunk, I have the first lathe you are looking at sat unused under my bench. I only live in Runcorn and if you want, you are welcome to come and have a play with it with the option to buy it if you like it (absolutely no obligation).

(...I've got the bug!)now how to store planes?

Great question Togs, as I too am suddenly acquiring them. I think some of the ringleaders should post pictures of how they store theirs ;)

    Axminster's new Evolution chuck

Has anyone bought this or tried it yet? It looks good in the adverts which I keep seeing, but having just phoned up, the lead time on this (for my thread at least) is four months, if I order now. Does that seem a bit poor to anyone else? Axi are a fair-sized company launching a premier new...

    Snagging, catching, jumping and banging...

As well as the above, you are likely to need two bowl gouges for flatter shaped bowls. I use a long-grind bowl gouge for the outside and some of the inside of bowls, but the walls of your bowl will sometimes (depending on angle) get in the way of the shaft of your tool, causing the bevel to...
