I've got a secondhand Electra Beckum dx with a large corrugated filter on top which is reasonably quiet. Be very careful when buying a dx as the cheaper ones (IMO) are very loud, meaning you will be less likely to use it. This is a genuine concern, especially in a very confined space...

Here they are, sharpened. I'm very pleased, they are really nice to use and take a great edge (it remains to be seen how long it lasts of course), although the backs took a while to flatten (especially the largest, which was fairly heavily pitted). What causes pits to form? I've rubbed them...

It certainly does Giuliano. I've sharpened the iron, which had a micro bevel at about 30 degrees. Do you think I need to put that back on again? It seems to take lovely shavings and the sole is dead flat. I've never seen two screws before on the chip breaker, or a cb with a bevel on it...

Fromey, I thought about that as well, but I think I'm going to go for one of the Japanese dovetail saws as I love the other one I've got (without the stiffening along the back). Very, very nice cut and easy to use. I'll be interested to know how you find it to use when it arrives.
