Help with Owning & Outfitting my first workshop

Hi Nic, welcome to the site and happy New Year. In terms of second hand...the missus shouldn't be anywhere near your shed, so no need to worry about second hand ;) The for sale section on here is often a very good place for picking up decent kit for a reasonable price. In terms of the specific...

    Clifton plane sale!

Jim - mea culpa. I probably shouldn't have repeated gossip without checking, apologies.

    Clifton plane sale!

It's what one of the staff told me in the shop, can't say how reliable they are though.

    Clifton plane sale!

The word is the range has been dropped because production is being moved abroad and Axi aren't happy about it. They apparently have their own range of premium planes being developed at the moment.

Hello, and a couple of questions

Nigel, welcome to the forum. I started with this lathe for-sale-awvsl-lathe-and-chuck-240-t61902.html and it is a cracker. The best thing to do is to go along to a local Woodturning club and try a few out and have a chat with people who have been turning for a while. This forum is a wealth...

    Kity 613 Bandsaw wheels

Cracking saw, which looks like mine AFTER I've cleaned it :) :) I've just remade the insert on mine out of a piece of beech as the old one was dropping which clogged the cut as on the back of the insert hole. That has made a massive difference. Also, if you can get hold of a small piece of...

Maybe you get the cooker and washing machine with it??

New to the craft - intro & questions on dust

I've got a secondhand Electra Beckum dx with a large corrugated filter on top which is reasonably quiet. Be very careful when buying a dx as the cheaper ones (IMO) are very loud, meaning you will be less likely to use it. This is a genuine concern, especially in a very confined space...

    Sharpening.....

+1 for a 6 inh bench grinder (I have the RP one) plus a sharpening jig for ease of repeatability. Good luck.

    Ulmia plane

Cheers BB, is it generally well thought of? I really like the look and feel of it, but what do I know?? ;)

    Which chisels to buy?

Here they are, sharpened. I'm very pleased, they are really nice to use and take a great edge (it remains to be seen how long it lasts of course), although the backs took a while to flatten (especially the largest, which was fairly heavily pitted). What causes pits to form? I've rubbed them...

    Ulmia plane

It certainly does Giuliano. I've sharpened the iron, which had a micro bevel at about 30 degrees. Do you think I need to put that back on again? It seems to take lovely shavings and the sole is dead flat. I've never seen two screws before on the chip breaker, or a cb with a bevel on it...

    Ulmia plane

Andy, thanks very much mate. Graham, course you can...£37 plus postage of about £7. Down to the shed in a bit, although it might be tomorrow before it sees any wood as I'm back on lates.

    Ulmia plane

Well, I've just got back from work and this had arrived from the bay... I'm very excited as it's a woody, but with proper adjusters (don't curse Jimi, it might be easy for you to adjust the woodies with a mallet (hammer) , but it takes me forever)! And it has a lovely smooth lignam...

    Help please

Matt, if you get very stuck, you could come across to me in Runcorn and I'll see if I can help at all. Good luck.

    Turning Lessons

Dibs, I'm on the other (right) side of the Pennines, but you would be welcome to come over for few hours and I could go through the basics (no payment required), but I'm relatively new to it myself. That said, if I were you, I'd get to a local turning club. I had a huge amount of free tuition at...

    Axminster sale today only

Fromey, I thought about that as well, but I think I'm going to go for one of the Japanese dovetail saws as I love the other one I've got (without the stiffening along the back). Very, very nice cut and easy to use. I'll be interested to know how you find it to use when it arrives.

I didn't go for it in the end, but I have a feeling I'll regret it. Oh well...

    Axminster sale today only

There look to be some cracking deals at Axi today. £77 off this Veritas low angle jack plane. http://www.axminster.co.uk/veritas-veritas-low-angle-jack-plane-prod724792/ Strangely enough, I was in the Warrington store yesterday trying some out and this was the plane I liked the most, more...
