newbie atempt at a bowl third turning session unkown wood

For a third session, that's looks great Stuart. It's hard to see from the picture, but it could be sapele. Was it very dusty? Perhaps a close-up picture or at a higher definition might assist? Good luck with your turning.

    Planers - Understanding numbers

There is an American called Roy Underhill who works entirely with hand tools and does really interesting programmes about woodworking. If you've got time and want to learn more, have a look at this link http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/video/3100/3105.html It's a slippery slope you're on...

    Planers - Understanding numbers

Hi Nev and welcome to the forum. I presume you mean planes, as opposed to planers (a planer is either someone who collects planes AND uses them =D> , or a machine for planing wood). There are about a squillion threads on here discussing planes in detail. It sounds like what you want is a...

    Car boot 13-07-13

Right, having fettled and messed about about for a couple of days, I've worked out that I need the aluminium bits to grip the stone. The spindle is a mil or two bigger than the part which passes through the stone, where it sticks through the carrier and this stands the stone off the body enough...

    Sharpening Jig set up.

Bench grinder is the worst by far?? It takes me about 30 seconds in total to sharpen both of my large bowl gouges, mid-bowl, using a jig and bench grinder. It would take longer than that to take the bowl off the lathe and put whatever I was using to sharpen the tool back on it. I would then...

    Car boot 13-07-13

Thanks for the tips. I'll try that first and if not, there are a few stones which seem to have the right sized hole. I enjoyed the link Scouse, thanks.

    Car boot 13-07-13

Ah, ash, sorry. There's a split down the other side near the blade. With regards to the grinder, I've taken it apart, cleaned and oiled it and it seems a simple and solid bit of kit. I've got an 8 inch grey wheel from the grinder I've just bought and there is only 3.5mm difference between the...

    Car boot 13-07-13

I went to another car boot this morning with a view to getting some mortise chisels. Also, in the back of my mind, I was thinking about the hand grinder which I regret not getting last week for £8. Anyway, I found the same one and got the guy down to a fiver; I've yet to try a stone on it...

Kity 613 bearings - can anyone make replacements?

Can I say a public and very large thank you to Ian who made the bearing holders for me. They arrived just now and fit admirably, especially considering my amateur drawings. Ian, you are a star and I owe you a pint. Noggsy

    Car boot 10/07/13

Cheers Andy. The ratchets work on both (although one is a bit stiff) and take a 10mm bit with room to spare. I think I've got an old square shank augur bit somewhere, I'll try that later.

    Car boot 10/07/13

I got these two Stanley braces today for a tenner after being inspired watching Roy Underhill using a brace to such good effect. One is a number 73, the other 78 and both are 10 inch with ratchets. I didn't buy the fairly large hand-powered grinder for £8 which I am regretting a bit now. It...

Virana, welcome to the board. This is the hand tools part though - try in general woodworking (and I don't know the answer on either forum ;) )
