Work in Progress - Bench Update

Looking good mate. What about 2 or 3 battens fixed at right-angles to the shelf and secured under the table, which would then be free to pull out when the shelf was upright? Similar to how some drop-leaf tables work.

Moisture meter: 4 pins and/or wood type settings any good?

Thanks Chas, thought it must be something like that.

Moisture meter: 4 pins and/or wood type settings any good?

Out of necessity to find a suitably-sized blank for a Christmas present, I turned a sycamore or maple blank I got from a local tree surgeon. The trees were taken down in March this year and I was concerned that it would deform out of all recognition and I was quite looking forward to explaining...

    Skip scavenged ebony

It's no good mate. Unfortunately, that's Sri Lankan ebony and highly poisonous. I've got a mate who can destroy it legally, so parcel them up and send them to me. I'll even help you out and pay the postage ;)

Help, my bandsaw just stopped working

My bandsaw (a very reliable Kity 613) stopped working last week in between cuts. I think it was the cold in the workshop tightening the blade slightly which threw all the settings out and meant that the blade was tight against the back of the wooden plate in the table and also the...

Beautiful hand forged damascus folding knife. Now finished

Well, I might have looked it up a bit :) Nice to see someone enjoying 25 years of retirement...something I hope to do in about, errr, 25 years (unless they extend the retirement age yet again). I'll have to come and have a brew and compare war stories, if that's ok, next time I'm heading down...

Beautiful hand forged damascus folding knife. Now finished

Benchwayze - it depends on when your day was, but the definition of offensive weapon goes back to 1953; ;) "Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953 provides that an offensive weapon is any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having...

Beautiful hand forged damascus folding knife. Now finished

You're welcome. Also, watching the video again, I don't think that's a knife with a lockable blade. He doesn't press anything when he folds it as far as I can see, so unless the blade is over 3 inches, it would be legal anyway.

And that Damascus knife is gorgeous. I want one.

Beautiful hand forged damascus folding knife. Now finished

Any knife where the blade can be locked is a lock-knife in this context, including Stanley knives. Any sharply pointed or bladed article can only be carried with lawful authority or reasonable excuse and (unusually for the law) it's up to the individual to prove the authority or excuse (it's...

Just popped in with a few questions

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm disappointed your questions were not about sharpening ;) Someone will be along shortly with some sensible answers.

Chisels - how low can you go?

Guys, strong debate is interesting to watch and sometimes even informative, but there's a bit of a tendency at the moment to make things excessively personal. For what it's worth, that's when it stops being fun for me and in my opinion, drags this fantastic forum down a bit. Attack the point...

    New workshop reuired - maybe a log-cabin?

Sorry mate, I really can't remember. I'll try and dig out the info when I get back this weekend, but it was about five years ago and I'm not sure I still have it. Mine's under a cherry tree and I do get a collection of leaves, but the wind tends to take care of that. Needles are smaller, so...

Chisels - how low can you go?

Andy, thanks for an informative and useful review. Now, if you could only find a sharpening stone in Poundland and review that, I wouldn't need to look outside tonight ;)

    New workshop reuired - maybe a log-cabin?

My workshop is a kit-bought log cabin and it's a great option for the speed and cost in my opinion. I've now built two, one for my mum (which she works as a therapist from) and my own, which was built as a music room, but now has all my tools etc in. Some things to consider; - Roof overhang...

    mini lathe

I've never had a problem gluing lignum for mallet heads. I use Titebond and Titebond 3 and have made 5-6 mallets with a variety of woods for the handles without an issue. Good luck in finding a smaller lather and I would definitely have on with VS.

I posted some of my father-in laws stuff but been deleted ?

Craig - hi and welcome to the forum. I'm sure a Mod will be along in a bit (maybe tomorrow now) to give you proper guidance, but certainly there is great interest in old tools on the forum. It's worth getting involved in the Hand Tools part, especially if you have any specific questions about...

Hello newbie here, timber frame log store project

Thoroughly enjoyable to read and I think the end product looks sturdy and Workmanlike (is that near Heckmondwike?). Your neighbour is very lucky. I look forward to your next WIP.

    bandsaw blade

Ring Ian at Tuffsaws and get his advice first. As well as being knowledgable and extremely helpful, he is competitively priced. There's a very good reason why every thread on here which mentions bandsaw blades, also mentions Tuffsaws. Save your tenner until you've spoken to/emailed him.
