Using cedar for doors and windows

What are they treating Accoya with to make it so aggressive?

Using cedar for doors and windows

I couldn’t comment on the pros and cons of bi folds but I couldn’t imagine that cedar would be a good choice of construction material. In my albeit limited experience, I’ve found it to exhibit the rather unusual combination of being both soft (not unexpected for a softwood) and brittle. It’s...

I'll be keen to see some photos and a rough stock list... Its like storage wars for wood! :D

    gloves?

hang on... let me just open my can of worms..... I personally don’t wear gloves as I view their benefits generally are outweighed by the significant drawback that they can get caught up in power tools... but only when your hand is in a position that it should be in anyway. i.e. if I was stupid...

Record Power CL4 vs Jet 1221vs

The last 1628 I saw on eBay went for £1400. To be fair it had the bed extension and riser post but it’s still a significant jump on budget and you’d have to factor in your time and fuel to go pick it up... They don’t pop up al that often. It amazes me how well these things hold onto their...

Record Power CL4 vs Jet 1221vs

Sorry... I’m in the same situation looking for my first lathe and trying to balance off the capacity against compactness. I don’t doubt the Jet’s are good but if comparing the 12-21 against the axi At350 (or hope supplied equivalent), I’d argue the Taiwanese special is better bang for your...

Record Power CL4 vs Jet 1221vs

Would you not be better off comparing the Jet 1221 to the RP Herald? I’d throw the Axi AT350 into the mix too just to confuse things...

Anyone made an adjustable height desk?

You’d be surprised at the cost of the actuators... I looked into it before and came to the conclusion that an Ikea desk would be the best starting point and putting your own top on if you wanted something fancy.

    Expansion Consideration.

Agreed... most movement will be in and out from the wall on both the legs and shelves so they should match pretty well.

    Wood to painted wall adhesive

I’ve just finished building a timber frame extension that was studwork with rock wool, 11mm OSB, PE, 40mm celotex, 11mm OSB, to be finished in plasterboard and skim. Feels very stable and like others have highlighted you can hang things anywhere without much thought.

Great video for a newbie - NOT

I don’t own a table saw but if I needed one in a hurry I’d pop out to screwfix and get the cheapo £100 rather than faff about with that! Am I right in thinking that cross cutting with a fence is a bad idea too?

Things that didn't go as planned (aka disasters)

Not as bad but I’ve left a phone on studwork that was then closed up... to be fair I don’t think there’s a single stud wall in the uk that doesn’t have a tape measure, roll of ptfe, pencil, remnants of builder’s lunch, etc entombed within...

Repairing water damaged oak top that's swelled!

I'm sure others will comment but I'd personally leave it alone for a few weeks to see what further movement occurs before I did anything to attempt to repair it.

Everest Windows- what a bunch of ****""s

The window board is shocking and the repair/filling just shows the lack of professionalism. It needs removing and replacing, measuring the angle of the mitre rather than guessing. The worry is if that’s the workmanship they think is acceptable for visible work, what is going on with the...

Manmade "timber" for stud wall sole plate?

Me too... I was going to make a timber door to replace what was there but when I costed it up it was as cheap to put an electric roller door in and it performs better and will last longer. I suspect it will add value to the house too... I now have the poshest sectional prefab garage on the...

Manmade "timber" for stud wall sole plate?

Is replacing the existing garage door with an insulated roller door not at option? It’ll be draft free, be somewhat useful at keeping heat in and allows you to open it and close it depending if you want it blocked off or not blocked off?

    Protecting cedar cladding

Thanks for the response about ease of use of Osmo at this time of year. I'm not quite sure about the relevance of use on horizontal surfaces? My understanding is its not suitable for use on a surface that will collect water, but I could treat my cladding indoors, sitting it horizontally and...

Manmade "timber" for stud wall sole plate?

Sounds to me like your proposed solution probably hits the hassle/price sweet spot. an alternative is fitting a better garage door; you might be surprised when looking at a cost comparison and it lead you the option to open it in the summer.

Manmade "timber" for stud wall sole plate?

If you were building a habitable timber framed building/extension you'd put it on a plinth and keep your timber off the floor but then I look at my log cabin and its sat on a recycled plastic profiles and doing just fine (https://www.tuin.co.uk/Composite-Profil ... Beams.html). I think my...
