Bandsaw Motor - cautionary tale !

These budget bandsaws from e.g. record power, jet, axminster all seem to have similarities. I wouldn't be surprised if they all originate in the same chinese factory. Why not give record power a bell and see if their motor will fit.

Please help find a right pillar drill/ drill press/ drill stand for me

I don't think I would buy an expensive tool just for this one task. I'd be more inclined to knock up a sled for a hand held drill. It's not as if it's going to need engineering accuracy to pass a cable through.

    Importance of crown guard?

I have a nice Bosch table saw. I find the best safety features for it are my band saw and track saw.

I hoped this day would never come - loosing my workshop.

If you only meet clients by appointment could you separate the showroom location from production?

Current cost of standard oak board 1"

Obviously quite a few people have no idea about mark-up and margin. Margin is the difference between your per-job costs and your sales price as a % of sales price, so buy at 50, sell at 100 is 50% margin. This is very typical GM for many business who are not one man bands. Out of gross margin...

Humidity and wood movement - the basics

@profchris - have you ever considered using accoya in a musical instrument (because it almost doesn't change dimension with humidity)? This isn't a recommendation - I'm genuinely just interested if it would have any application. I wonder what it's sound qualities would be? Is humidity movement...

Woodwork design software other than Sketchup ?

I use Turbocad. You would need deluxe @ £199 for 3D but I find 3D incredibly useful. Once you get your head around it, it can massively help design. For example, if you want to create meeting/jointed parts, you can draw just one part, duplicate it and then draw a primitive (box/cylinder or...

Fence upgrade to ‘cheap’ Screwfix Titan thicknessor/planer

Let the chips fall and sweep them up afterwards. It's what masks are for.

Current cost of standard oak board 1"

£50 board + £30 for planing and finishing + £5 for transport + £60 for fitting (wages) + £10 for sundries/fixings = £155. Business operates on 50% gross margin out of which business takes fixed overheads and profit, so £310 +Vat = £372 Not an unreasonable price really.

    Where to buy Accoya?

From a commercial perspective it is a fair point. However, from a DIYer perspective it hasn't added much to the per-project cost. At least it hasn't nearly doubled like carcassing timber seems to have done from the local builders merchant. !!

Anyone pleased or advice with a cheap planer thicknesser.

I have the really cheap Titan Titan TTB579PLN 204mm Electric Planer Thicknesser 230V As a planer/jointer it's garbage - tables don't remain level and the fence is rubbish. As a thicknesser its very usable as long as you don't get too greedy in what you take off. 1mm at a time is OK. It's been...

    Where to buy Accoya?

Here's one. Sapele = Shrinkage: Radial - 4.8%, Tangential: 7.2%, Volumetric: 12.8%, Accoya = Shrinkage (avg) ISO 4469 Wet to 65% RH, 20°C Radial Tangential 0.4% 0.8% Wet to Oven Dry Radial Tangential 0.7% 1.5% I only use it for myself, not commercially, but have (and am currently making)...

Sash Window Draught Proofing and Double Glazing

I made my sashes with rebates around the parting bead so the sash faces run barely 5-6mm apart, and then used a double row of pile (one on each sash) to close the gap at the meeting rails. Perhaps novel, but it's been and still is perfect.

Sash Window Draught Proofing and Double Glazing

Couple of points. If you are going to make new sashes for the original box frame to take DG, you do have to consider the additional weight. Many single glazed sash windows had 3mm glass. Change that to 2 x 4mm and you have loads of extra weight. If you use ordinary red or whitewood then you do...

Careful who you let teach you (table saws again)

@Phil Pascoe Not saying I am a brilliant lifelong builder, but that does sound a bit like me. The only "tickets" I have date back to my merchant navy career that ended in 1982. Since then "university of life" and "self-education" all the way. I'm glad I'm nearing the end of my working career...

    Coronet wood lathe

I think you'll find it's 3/4" with 16TPI and same as many record power lathes. Do get a second check as I have only just acquired a coronet myself and at the beginning of a learning curve.

Careful who you let teach you (table saws again)

Way before I was married back in the 70's when I was in the merchant navy, was warned of the dangers of rings and handling steel wire rope. When I married I never bothered with a ring for this reason - people do ask me about it sometimes. If you need to know why, google finger degloving...

Buying timber & sheet materials Lancaster

CW Berry in Leyland have a reasonable stock of hardwoods - mainly joinery timbers. It's all in the big green shed at the back of the yard behind the timber and building materials huts - go in and have a look. I've bought large planks of sawn Utile, Shorea, Meranti from them. It's not on their...
