Advice needed for setting up a small woodworking workshop

Considering that there's a large tradition of fine woodworking in the UK - there are stately homes in and around every town filled with exquisitely made furniture, done completely with hand tools - you would think that this would have carried through to today in a bigger way. I live in a fairly...

Advice needed for setting up a small woodworking workshop

A lathe might be an idea unless you plan on only making square legs, although some people seem to outsource this to full time turners. Turning is a completely different skill to furniture making and requires a lot of dedicated practice time so you might want to take this in to consideration...

The fun (?) of trying to make 16 of something look the same!

Mora Frost 106 carving knife on eBay. Should go through Cherry and Walnut like butter. Mine came razor sharp but maybe strop it with some autosol if you do get one. They're about a tenner on amazon and just about every wood carver uses one regularly.

So How LOUD is your Planer/Thicknesser Exactly?

Bring it round, I could use something to compete with my neighbour's TV.

    Plenty at Aldi on Thursday.

I got the screwdrivers, a pair of work boots (they run big, I'm a ten and the tens are loose on me. I already did the gardening in them though) and a yard brush. All pretty good. I got the Stanley knife set and the magnetic dishes from Lidl. The magnets are strong. I threw them on the till...

Lidl bench belt sander and jigsaw offers today

Just been to my local Lidl and wasn't overly impressed with most of it. Aldi have a lot of similar things on offer that seem better quality. Got a stanley knife set from Lidl, and some of those magnetic trays then popped to Aldi for the workboots and a yard brush. I thought Aldi may have drill...

Pocket hole bit - equivalent to the UJK one?

I'm using cordless. I believe that the bit I have is the newer model because I actually wanted the older one as it was cheaper (I didn't realise it was made of inferior materials) but while my local Axminster had it in stock according to the website, they wouldn't sell me it in store. Unless...

Pocket hole bit - equivalent to the UJK one?

The jig is the UJK basic one. Some eBay users are selling HSS drill bits incredibly cheaply but of course they're in China with a two week delivery.

Help needed in SW London with Wood* ID and value (* & stuff)

Second could be walnut but it's hard to tell from the photos. You might want to consider posting some of the tools for sale on here if selling is the eventual aim. I'm personally after some planes and turning tools and would be happy to pay a fair price.

    Can anybody help?

As someone who spent weeks wondering why I was getting tearout rather than shavings - don't use ash.

Pocket hole bit - equivalent to the UJK one?

I'm cladding the interior walls of my workshop in 'reclaimed' (crap wood that no one wants) wood. I'm making panels screwed together with pocket holes for speed however I've made one panel, hit a knot and the end of the drill bit has snapped off. I've just glued it back on with some serious...

    Lathe buying advise? £400 budget

Get something dependable second hand. Got a Record CL3 on eBay with a set of chisels, a (useless) chuck and a stand for it. Does your budget include wood? I can turn decent bowls but I would probably turn a good few spindle blanks in to sawdust before turning a matching pair.

    Plenty at Aldi on Thursday.

Looks like I'm spending up on Thursday then. Lidl also have a DIY 'event' on. Not as much stuff, but they've got their jigsaw back in, and their work boots are a fiver cheaper.

    Pocket hole jig

The UJK ones are pretty good. I have Axminster's £14 budget UJK jig and it's probably more pain than it's worth when it comes to setting it up but it gets the job done. I probably should have bought the full £70 jig. I actually got some torx bits from Axminster and accidentally bought the 25...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Those Aldi things are in stock over here on thursday if it's what I'm thinking of. They have a box full of o-rings, a cable management set, various other stuff. I think four or five different sets in all.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

I'm tempted to post a thread on my workshop revamp now, as a way of showing people what not to do. So far I've started putting new (old spare ones from the house - this was supposed to be cheap) floorboards down only for the entire concrete foundation to crack when I bolted the roofing battens...

    'Preparing' freshly felled wood.

I don't know, I've had some terrible sycamore in the past. There's a fruit bowl in the kitchen that's still there because it was one of the first things I made, but the spalting and 'character' in it have gone so far that it could be made of cork. I have some black walnut that's waiting to...

    'Preparing' freshly felled wood.

A family friend has recently cut down a sycamore and saved the entire tree for me. He brought round a sample log, and by looking at the bark (smooth) its a young tree, however he brought a section from the smallest branch he had and it's at least 10" across. He warned me that we might have...

Beech log cutting and beech vessels

Before I moved in to my current house the previous owner decided to take a chainsaw to an old beech tree in the garden and make a 'rustic' looking bench out of it to attract renters. What I was left with was probably a ton of badly split beech logs in the firewood pile, and a bench that I could...

    Plenty at Aldi on Thursday.

Well I popped in yesterday and my local Aldi are selling off leftover stock of what looks like pretty much every tool they've had in the last year or so. Went back today to pick up a handsaw since mine are all nice and blunt and of course the only thing they've sold out of is the saws. I think...
