What's been your Best Buy this Black Friday/weekend

It coincides generally with people's last pay packet of the year. It's psychological; people are stressed and panicking about Christmas shopping, suddenly a nice sum of money appears and there just happens to be a ton of sales on. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Turning pens. What do I need?

For some reason when I started turning I was against turning pens. I've come round now and wouldn't mind making some for Christmas presents if I can get some done in time. It's not something I've done much research on or watched many videos on. What's the minimum equipment that I would need to...

    Leaky shed

OK so I went in to my workshop for the first time in a week or so to find that the roof had leaked a fair amount. My lathe was covered in a thin film of dew, but no visible rust there. One wall, which my workbench is against (and is the only wall it can go against) had water running down it and...

How fed up are you with hearing about dust?

You can get some very good dust masks for relatively little money now too. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Sharpening - I'm sorry!

Which brand of diamond stone/which grades of coarseness would you recommend? Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    What band saw blades?

That's strange. My tuffsaws doesn't have anything on it. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Cheap Trend diamond stones

What are people using these for? Are they being used in conjunction with finer stones? I've never used diamond stones so I don't know much about them. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Buying wood for dining table online.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like they care about what they're selling, which is good. I'll give them an email and see if they can get some beech to me. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Sharpening - I'm sorry!

I go up through the grits on wet and dry then finish on a Japanese ice bear whetstone from Axminster. Then just touch up on the stone when needed. To be fair the stone does wear away quickly. But it was only about £30 which is nothing compared to the amount that some sharpening systems cost...

Still struggling to find a vacuum cleaner.

Cleaned more times than I've counted. Vacuum worked OK up until the first cleaning, for which I followed the instructions, after that it seems to need cleaning every time I use it. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Black Friday....

I dropped in to Axminster the other say and they do have sales on on Friday. Unfortunately I needed something there and then or I might have waited to see if it's in their deals. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Housing and Help to Buy

I'm in my 20s and renting so I'm probably somewhere in the target market. From what I've looked in to it seems to be more rhetoric than substance which, having worked in government, doesn't surprise me. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Still struggling to find a vacuum cleaner.

My floors are getting ridiculous now as the Vax Vibe I got on sale at Asda when I moved in is refusing to pick up 90% of the dust and fluff. Considering that I'm constantly trailing sawdust in through the back door and my dog makes up for having a non-shedding coat by chewing any offcuts...

    What band saw blades?

I don't think they're the same, I believe Ian makes them to order. Maybe made to the same specs using a similar technique. I confess I bought an Axminster one yesterday because it was right in front of me and I needed it today. I'll be going back to tuffsaws next time though. Sent from my...

Finishing wood that has been 'stabilised' with epoxy.

I am making a piece from pear that has some internal bark. It has been sat for several years and is dry. I have some West System epoxy that I intend to force in to the bark area which is more like a crack in the board. I don't need to impregnate the board with epoxy at a cellular level or...

A few pieces of advice on making a stool?

I'm going to splay the legs. Might also have to knock up an outboard tool rest from some spf I have lying round to turn the seat. I'm going to turn it rough then finish it with hand tools. I'm not confident about turning such a heavy piece on the lathe. I think I'll stabilise the wood tomorrow...

A few pieces of advice on making a stool?

Nice seat. What's the best way to cut a mortise in a round leg like that with hand tools? Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Equipment for a specific project

As a relative beginner I'd probably be comfortable tackling the kitchen units and the wardrobes provided that A) I had a large space in which to do so B) I had well made and probably expensive tools, and C) My space and tools were set up to exact specs to make sure that everything was flat and...

A few pieces of advice on making a stool?

The girlfriend needs a new stool to sit on while sewing. She was using an old carpenters bench/stool type thing that my dad built twenty or so years ago and that Iiberated from my mums garage when I moved out. Unfortunately for my girlfriend I decided to put it back to its original use a while...
