    Bench design / Plans

Mines 18mm mdf on top of Wickes PAR pine that was on offer. The pine was 34mm square so I just screwed four together to make 78mm square legs. Stretchers are all 34x74mm. It does the job and probably cost about 60 quid. I needed something to put stuff on and didn't want to spend a ridiculous...

Lidl Quick Release Bar clamps- Avoid.

Costco steak is better, but the difference in quality isn't worth the extra cost in petrol. Anyway I have a couple of the aldi clamps, among others, clamping a new top on to my TV stand. The other brands are irwin and dekton. I had two of each and they're all the same quick release style...

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

Seems to me that they're completely aware that wood is a commodity which fluctuates in price and are using that as an excuse to up prices where they think they can get away with it. I'd bet that there's little correlation between the prices they pay, especially for exotics, and the prices that...

What (type - abrasive medium) are you using to finish tools?

I use sandpaper up to about 1000 grit then an 'ice bear' waterstone from Axminster up to about 6000 grit, then autosol on an old leather belt to finish. The waterstone needs flattening far too often, and it's messy. If I were buying again I'd probably go for diamonds but I have it now so it's...

There should be a sticky thread in general woodworking for Lidl and Aldi announcements. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

I always thought Jewsons were in the same category as B&Q and homebase . From averaging the posts in here it seems as if we are being taken for a ride, although maybe not to the extent that some people think. One thing that's clear to me is that trade discounts don't help the weekend...

    Tor Browser

Your motherboard has nothing to do with going online. That would be like someone trying to tell if you've paid your road tax by looking at your engines serial number. On topic: TOR is just a browser like Google Chrome or anything else, the difference being that it routes your connection...

Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

Sitefive I'm wondering if English is your first language. Forgive me if I'm wrong but your posting style suggests otherwise. The reason that I ask is because, unfortunately, timber yards are often run and staffed by salt of the earth, working class types who would probably tend towards a...

    SL Hardwoods?

Sorry, this is my last thread for a while. On a bit of a panic on the run up to Christmas. Thinking of pulling the trigger on an order from SL Hardwoods but their online store only lists 19mm PAR. I could live with this but I'd prefer thicker. I'd get their sawn boards and plane them myself...

    Steaming wood.

I'll have a go at boiling some tomorrow. I might document the results. I might even be tempted to dye the wood with a steamed pear dye at some point. Custard I'll send a pm, cheers. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Steaming wood.

So I wouldn't be able to steam it now? I've had this slab of pear for about six months saving it for something special and the colour has turned out to be disgusting. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Steaming wood.

I have some pear wood that I thought was steamed but isn't. I just finished some handles and it came out a dull sandy brown rather than orangey pink. If I want to steam it should I do this before or after it has been turned, and what is the best way to go about it? Sent from my LG-H815 using...

    Colouring Oak

Took apart a handful of pallets a few weeks ago so I have a flower pot full of nails rusting away in the garden. Just chucked a handful of them in a jar of white vinegar so I should have some results in a few days. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    TURNING BLANKS

You occasionally get some good deals on eBay but a lot of the prices can be over inflated. You need to look for people just getting rid of excess stock and offcuts rather than people making a business of it. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

A lathe for the wife.... advice

I've got a Clarke chuck which is enough of a pile of useless garbage that I'd never even consider buying Clarke tools again. Luckily it came free with my lathe as the bloke who sold it to me hated it just as much as I do. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    Forum Users Bandsaws

Just moved my Rexon BS2301A in to the workshop. First time it's been in its proper place rather than any empty floor space in the house. Surprisingly good little saw. I'm sure that a more pricey model would be a revelation to me, but for cutting turning blanks within its (very limited)...

Could I make my own bottle opener kits for turning?

Just wondering if it would be possible to somehow make my own bottle opener kits. Until now I've been buying from Axminster and similar but I'm a bit tired of the characterless chrome look. Would it be possible for me to somehow make my own using limited tools? All I have is a bandsaw, drill...

New bandsaw bought from a computer shop!

I've been looking for that particular bandsaw since I started woodworking. For some reason I really like how they look. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
