    New hand planes?

Okay, so while we're at it: British made or American made? All patriotism and nostalgia aside. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Products which are a nightmare to buy

Anything in the 'sales'. I've had my eye on a £500 laptop for a few months, went in to currys a month or so ago because they had the best price and the bloke working there put it up by a hundred quid while I was wandering round looking at something else. In the boxing day sale they're selling...

    New hand planes?

I have the bench grinder that I use for sharpening turning tools. There's another wheel on it that I use for primary bevels on various things. I've been through the 30 minute (more like an hour) slog doing the bevel by hand too in the past. The iron is as sharp as it will ever be. I will...

    New hand planes?

I know a lot of people tend to lean towards buying old planes and fixing them up rather than buying new but are there any new planes worth buying? I have a woodie for general flattening and an old Stanley 4 1/2 (that I bought second hand but did minimal work on as it had apparently been bought...

    Boxing day sales?

Anyone spotted any decent boxing day sales for tools? I see Axminster have a 'clearance' sale on but I haven't seen anything amazing around. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

What tool did you buy today?

I actually didn't use it until a few days ago. I sharpened it up then used it to flatten a bit of beech for a shelf. I used a Stanley 4 1/2 to finish and smooth. It's a fairly good plane. I think I got lucky. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

What tool did you buy today?

Not that it's always easy to tell but that looks identical to my wooden jointer. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    beginner question - sander

I'd go for corded too. Battery powered aren't as powerful, you get limited working time between charges and the battery will hold its charge less over time. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

    beginner question - sander

The delta sanders I've used have never really lived up to their promise of getting right in to corners, although the Black and Decker 'mouse' sander that I have is better than most DIY level sanders I've used. For corners and edges I'm always tempted to go for a cabinet scraper or a very sharp...

    For my next question...chucks

In all honesty I often prefer a hot glue gun to the chuck because I find it difficult to clean up the bottom of the bowl without it being off centre. I have a few faceplates with scrap blocks screwed on. I finish the bottom first then turn it round, glue it on and do the bowl. Then the hot...

    My achilles heel - finishes

Beeswax is food safe. It's been a common practice for hundreds of years to use it to protect wooden vessels. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Stripping oak sideboard - or not

Wow. Safe to say I did not expect it to come out looking so good. Well done. Fantastic job. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

What tool did you buy today?

Lie Nielsen cabinet scrapers. Made my own from an old disposable saw a while ago but I have some sapele on the way and I don't want to make life any harder than I have to with that reversing grain. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Lidl/Aldi chisels, on the soft side?

Funny. I bought some last time they were on offer, got them out for the first time yesterday, got them to mirror polish on the waterstones and strop, then promptly whacked the widest one on a screw that I'd missed. Very little damage - so much so that I got away with finishing my job without...

    What are these screws?

Figured out what they are, I think. They're 3/16" x 13/16" flange head whitworths. There are a couple of sellers on eBay. I've placed a bid but I'll have a rifle through my odds and ends drawers too but If anything they've probably taken a trip through the dog. Sent from my LG-H815 using...

    wood - price comparsion

I think that might be a good idea. Whenever someone buys some timber, they could post what it cost and where it came from. In addition to making some informed decisions it might be a good science experiment to see how much prices fluctuate, and it might give forum members something to go on if...

    What are these screws?

They were used to screw the drawer knobs on to a sideboard I recently finished restoring. A smarter man would have screwed them back in to the knobs for safe keeping, instead they migrated between coat and jeans pockets for six months until I put them in a safe place. I finally finished...

    Bench design / Plans

I think the veritas vices look really nice in terms of aesthetic. No idea how they perform though. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
