    repairing a disc cutter

Sounds like we're describing the same thing. I hope this link works - a bit of googling turned up the Argos Spring/Summer 1979 catalogue: https://issuu.com/retromash/docs/argos-no11-1979-springsummer/103 As old as me, and considerably more useful...

    repairing a disc cutter

Congrats on fixing, rather than binning - always satisfying. My ex's dad gave me a vintage B&D drill (orange casing - anyone know what era that was, just out of curiosity? '70s?) that had sat unused for many years as it would intermittently cut out. The cause? Sawdust/crud in the trigger meant...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

Perhaps, but why do I bother making lumps of timber in to furniture? If I factored in the cost of my time, it's an extremely expensive hobby, and would be far cheaper to buy something (and I'm certainly no craftsman, so quality isn't the issue). I rather like the idea of repurposing the steel...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

Excellent point to mention, I have edited my original post accordingly! Thanks

    Wood screws......

For general work, then turbo gold from Screwfix. As stated, the 4mm snap in oak, but I've yet to have a 5mm dia. do this. However, I recently got several packs of NOVI Pro "Stick Fit" from Jewsons. They "take" more of the bit than a normal pozi, so will presumably take more abuse before...

    Repurposing a blunt file?

Ha! As this is a public forum, I am going to answer "no" - you can decide whether to believe me or not...! I do like the idea of turning it in to a knife though - thanks!

    Repurposing a blunt file?

As per the title, my standard "go-to" file has finally become blunt to the point of uselessness. And it only lasted 25 years - modern rubbish! :) I know some people grind files in to turning tools, but this one is a bit small (and a half-round type) EDIT - as mentioned below, file steel is...

    marine ply

Thanks all. Silfi - I'm in Kent, so about as far from you as can be, without getting wet feet! But I very much appreciate the thought. I should be able to find some structural ply without any bother. Thanks again

    marine ply

That's a pity, but thanks for confirming. Anyone used regular ply in a bathroom? I want to tile on top of a bit to fill the horizontal gap between the end of the bath and the wall, and paint a bit to go vertically in the same place (If that made sense). Will the inevitable steam/moisture make...

    marine ply

Hi Do any of the likes of Wickes sell marine ply? I only need a little bit, and delivery of a huge sheet (that I don't want!) is expensive. Or is the glue in their hardwood ply waterproof? Thanks

    Metal profile roof sheets dripping

I had spray foam on my old workshop's metal roof. It sorted the problem perfectly, but I had metal joists, and it also made a terrible mess when spraying it on.

    Highlighting engraving in lead

Chalk dust? At least if it doesn't work, it'd just take a rinse to get back to square one.

    Novice copper pipe soldering

Wow, thanks for all of that - it's reassuring to hear that plenty have self-taught, and the 12-point reply was brilliantly informative. I have solid walls and concrete floors, hence enquiring about copper, as it will be on display, eeeek. Thanks again, I am going to have a play.

    Novice copper pipe soldering

Hi I have been undertaking small plumbing tasks using compression joints. However, for some bigger tasks that I'd like to do (moving most of the radiators), it's going to get expensive. Has anyone self-taught themselves copper soldering? And how do you know (other than refilling the pipes with...

What to make with your kids now schools are shut.

Totally unseasonal, but this thread reminded me of a weekend from my childhood. My Dad gave my brother, sister, and I wood to make ourselves sledges/sleighs. No idea what inspired the project, as I believe it was not the depths of winter at the time. However, we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I...

Larder cupboard doors - weight limits

Could you design the spice rack/whatever rack so that it adds rigidity to the door, instead of simply hanging off it? Apologies if you were already intending to do so.

    Smelly Wood

On the other hand, I was delighted to find that holly smells like my Grandad's tobacco pouch. Not like ciggy smoke, but the unsmoked leaves.
