    Mobile/Space Saving Bench Ideas?

You could glue&screw a piece of e.g. 50mm square batten down the middle of a sturdy piece of MDF (or any flat material), which will clamp in the jaws of your workmate, giving a larger flat surface? Obviously, if it overhangs massively, and you put something heavy right on the edge, there's the...

    protective pictureframe glass?

Hi all Whilst out with the better half, she spotted a tapestry in a frame (the stall holder called it something else, but I can;t remember what). The frame is knackered, so I voluntereed to make a replacement. To help protect the thing, is it possible to get glass for frames that'll...

    dark chopping board wood

Hi I'm making a chopping board from sycamore. What hard-wearing, food-safe wood, that's naturally dark in colour, can I use for some contrasting detailing? The other popular chopping board wood seems to be beech, but that's not really much of a contrast. Many thanks

    food safe oil's/vanish's

Can vegetable oil (as in the kind used for cooking) be used? I'm currently making a chopping board for a present, and would like to accentuate the grain for when it's presented.

Thanks for the reply. We'll be building before getting any birds, so will allow plenty of time for airing. Thanks!

    Chicken-friendly wood preserver

The better half has decided she wants to keep a couple of chickens, and yours truly has been tasked with building their new home. Can anyone advise what wood preserver is best, for both preserving the wood, and not poisoning the chickens (and me, via the eggs)? Cheers!

No longer able to get bikes from recycling center

Our local tip used to let you buy stuff, usually for a nominal quid or two. However, the contract has now changed, and it's no longer allowed at our dump. A real shame.

Woodwork on TV - Kevin McCloud's shed

It was enjoyable, but a bit too light on detail. I left the room for only a few minutes, and the shed was entirely built in that space of time, plus he'd made the bark beer. Although in the myriad re-caps, it looked rank anyway! I'll keep watching, but it would be vastly improved with a bit...

    Wine rack

Very, very nice. How did you cut the half-rounds, particularly the ones for the "fat" ends of the bottles? Thanks

    sealey SM94/C mortiser knob/handle query

Hi I recently won the above machine on Ebay. All in working order, and I'm very pleased. However (and this is my first mortiser, so apologies for any stupid questions/remarks) on the adjustable fence, there's a part that goes over the top of the workpiece, with a hole in the middle that the...

Cool, thanks all. Will have a go once my bench is built (which are the plans that the cleaver is sitting on in that photo...)

@ Marcros - yes, it looks like the back has been walloped to help drive it through @ Phil - no, but I'd be after a 2nd-hand one. They dear, then?

    handle repair on old cleaver?

Pic of the cleaver (apologies for photo quality). Any idea what it was originally meant for? I use it for lopping branches in the garden, and splitting timber. Thanks p.s. for scale, it's sitting on an A4 sketchpad

    handle repair on old cleaver?

Thanks all. Will start looking out for a blowtorch (I assume that would suffice?). Reckon this is a good excuse to get an anvil, too! Will get a pic up. Bugbear - I'm not sure who this cleaver was intended for. It's crtainly seen some use over its life (which is part of its charm - the blade...
