    Making A Chess Board

Good luck with your project. Also a novice woodworker, I've found walnut to be pleasant to work with, and comes up quite dark with a couple of coats of danish oil. I made some salt-and-pepper pots for the other half, using maple and walnut, and the timbers look good together.

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

Glad it's not just my welding skills (or lack of them!)

    Bandsaw problems

Mine (hobby-sized jet) cuts straight, irregardless of blade width. Will be intetested to read other replies. Before the jet, I tried a 2nd-hand bbs20 that simply refused to cut straight. Even my dad, an experienced machinist, got fed up with it. Glad you got your draper sorted.

Can anyone recommend a decent MiG welder?

Just seen this thread - apologies if the following is too late to be of any use. I have a small Clarke mig welder. Can't remember the model number, but it's non-turbo. Is the dual (gas and non-gas type). Not had to change over yet, but the guidebook makes it sound a doddle. Not had any issues...

changing drive belt on jet jwbs-9 bandsaw

Hi, as above, can anyone give me any pointers? I can't get the big wheel off in order to fit the new belt. I can't tell if it's just akward, or if I'm doing it wrong. The manual doesn't cover belt changing. Thanks!

A couple of scaffold boards? Maybe chuck some sort of preserver on them? Probably won;t last forever, but got to be good for a few years' service?

    Cheap Workbench

Hi Looks smart. I like your idea of letting the rails in to the legs. I made my bench legs out of two pieces too, and wish I'd thought of doing the rails like that.

    What could I make?

Welcome to the forum, and (as stated by others) well done on saving the wood. Why do none of the skips I come across contain decent timber like that? Re what to make - what do you need? Are you lacking shelving anywhere? Does your wife need a jewellery/trinket box? The only way I can come up...

oil or varnish for bathroom door?

Hi The door is inbetween the basin and the bath, so chances of splashing are high. I'll treat that side with one of those varnishes as suggested. Many thanks

oil or varnish for bathroom door?

I'm stripping our internal doors, and oiling them instead. My question is - is this going to be OK for the inside of the bathroom door? Will it provide protection from the condensation and moisture, or would clear varnish be better for that face? We do have an extractor fan, but it still gets...

    stripping a ceiling

Interesting idea re new plasterboards. One question though - as the old ceiling covering apparently been skimmed, any thoughts on how to locate the joists, as the old nails/screws are covered (other than jabbing holes in the existing covering). Thanks all for the replies

    stripping a ceiling

That's what I was wondering. I might get a plasterer round to see what he/she needs to be removed before it can get skimmed. Thanks

    stripping a ceiling

Anyone on here a decorator and/or plasterer? Not sure if the following description will make any sense, but here goes. I've finally removed all the polystyrene ceiling tiles from our living room, and I'm currently steaming off the lining paper that was underneath (and is covered in the adhesive...

Wait for inspiration or go find it?

If anyone knows how to summon inspiration, please share! I'm envious of the father-in-law's ability to make things purely for pleasure. I, on the other hand, can only work based on needs arising.

Hi Very nice. Can I be cheeky and ask if you have a pic of the reverse of the tall gates? Thanks
