    Problem with new Mitre Saw

I have always trusted Bosch and am as surprised as you. I tried all ways I could think of to cut the boards and each arrived at the same result. I cannot understand why it happens but as Doug B said maybe it’s a blade issue. Does anyone understand the laser issue please?

    Problem with new Mitre Saw

Hopefully someone can help me please. Just unpacked my new Bosch GCM8SDE mitre saw and have started to adjust the various settings for square etc. I have two issues which I hope someone has come across before.....the saw cuts square across a board and I adjusted the laser to be adjacent to the...

    Your Cars

As a 21 year old I worked part time in a garage near Thornbury, Bristol. A friend of the owner turned up one day in Jimmy McCrae’s Opel Manta 400 which he was running-in in readiness for the 1983 Lombard RAC rally which was starting I think in Bath. He took me for a run up the road in it as it...

    Your Cars

Owned this scary fast car for thirteen years until we decided to replace it with something we could go away in for weekends and trips. So bought the 991 Carrera S to replace it. Fast but nowhere near as scary! Daily driver is BMW 540i Touring which is a great car to drive and plenty of space for...

    Tantalised Roofing Battens

Yes it did seem to be a lot of battening. That makes sense. Thank you. What size battening is that please?

    Tantalised Roofing Battens

Thanks for advice everyone and fir the pictures and explanation mikej460. As I now understand it...plywood sarking then horizontal battens onto sarking, then vertical battens, then tyvek onto vertical, then horizontal battens?

    Tantalised Roofing Battens

Thanks to you both. I just felt that an inch was too high for the shingles to sit. I guess I will buy them and see. Sounds as though any planing will need treatment - thanks for the recommendation.

    Tantalised Roofing Battens

I am re-roofing a logstore with Western Red Cedar shingles. I am covering the original roof supports with sheet ply covered with tyvek. Then I intend to fit ten 2.4m battens 19 x 38mm tanalised. I can only currently get 25mm thick which are too thick for my liking. My question is if I run these...

    Treating exterior oak

Only use stainless steel for your studs/rods for pots and pans. Copper whilst looking nice will stain the oak. Oak (like douglas fir, sweet chesnut, etc) is so reactive with metals that you really can only use SS. In Bury St Edmunds you are not near the sea so you won't need 316 quality - A2 or...

What's the most stupid thing you've done in woodworking?

Years ago I worked for a salmon smokery. The process started at the ‘wet end’ where the fish were filleted by hand using extremely sharp straight-bladed filleting knives. For fun the young ‘Samurai warriors’ would stab the stacked-up empty polystyrene fish boxes. Unfortunately one of the boxes...

Planing Oak Sleepers with an Electric Planer

Sorry Andy - just seen your reply. Yes my blades are the same. I sat them alongside the blades I removed and they were identical.

Planing Oak Sleepers with an Electric Planer

OK. I have worked it out. Ollie gave me a clue - I remembered when I changed the blades over that there is a sprung shim under the blade block. I slacked off the three locking allen screws and then turned the two locking philips head screws until the blades were at the correct height and then...

Planing Oak Sleepers with an Electric Planer

Andy, yours cuts correctly as the blade reaches the same height as the rear table. Ollie, the blades are at their highest point and as such don't reach the wood so I cannot see how they can cut? What I cannot understand is that it worked before I changed the blades and there is no adjstment and...

Planing Oak Sleepers with an Electric Planer

I am after some help please. I read the forum almost daily but never have had reason to ask for help until now. Hopefully someone will knwo the answers.....I am building an oak sleeper raised bed and the 9 sleepers, whilst being generally the correct sizes, require planing so that they are...

I don’t see how this explains how to make the shape to the required size.

Help with Making a Custom Router Template

I have a number of flush mounted wall-mounting brackets to install on wooden boards. I want to create a template for my plunge router so I can accurately inlay them flush as you would a hinge for example. I understand that the MDF router template hole needs to be larger than the bracket to allow...

    Cutting shingles from hardwood planks

Shakes are usually very thick shingles - as I understand it you can usually cut two shingles from a shake. I understand that tradition says you should use a froe to split a shingle and then use a draw knife to create a tapered shingle. I was hoping to bypass that by simply splitting a plank with...
