    Customs charges to Australia.

If the figures are finished in some way - oil, paint, whatever you'll be fine. If not, they will be likely be burnt in arrival. Either way you should declare them as wooden toys / gift and expect Aussie customs to open this parcel and inspect them. There may now be a handling charge for this...

Great video for a newbie - NOT

I particularly like how nothing is square and the table appears to be resting (bouncing) on the drill/saw axle. I guess this is designed to dynamically counter kickback. Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should.

    Yikes

Surely the only option now is to buy a bigger pillar drill. Or perhaps just a longer pillar, if you can find one.

Repairing water damaged oak top that's swelled!

If you put a board and/or a board directly on it, it won't dry. Can you put spacers under the board to allow some air flow?

Which band saw, which dust extractor?

I have an old Inca bandsaw, with about 6" depth of cut. It doesn't quite manage everything I would like, but covers most bases and is nicely compact. 8+" depth of cut would be nice, but in my case would probably not fit in my shed and it would come with compromises elsewhere. Axminster's 320 mm...

Pillar drill recommendations for a £300 budget

I just brought a Startrite Bantam (similar to Mercury) bench drill for £40. They often go for a little more than this, but are cheaper than Fobco or Meddings on ebay. With a little fettling they are likely to be a lot nicer than a new £300 offering, so might be worth adding to the maybe list...

    Slate oil

I haven't come across slate oil, so just did some more reading. Some do mention they also contain resins. Again, this can be quite a broad term, but I wonder if some of them are essentially a thinned varnish that penetrates slate nicely. Danish oil would then seem to be a reasonable choice...

    Slate oil

Do you want to mix something up to use on slate?

    Slate oil

The difference between a wax and an oil is the melting point of the constituent chemical(s). Waxes have compounds with melting points > room temperture(ish). Chemically this is due to them having different molecular weights, extent of saturation (double bonds) and/or other differences in...

    Slate oil

No, not chemically like Danish oil. It's closer to a mix of white spirits and wax and I don't think it would behave like a 'drying oil'. What do you have in the cupboard to play with?

    Startrite Bantam/Mercury transport

Managed to pick this up without incident the other day. Quite manageable to lift by oneself in two pieces. Seems to mostly be in reasonable condition, with no play in the quill and some life left in the bearings. As expected will need a good clean and a bit of fettling. One oddity is that it...

    Box bottoms

You've made some lovely dovetails, so you should show them off. Put the bottom in a groove. You don't have to do stopped grooves for the front and back, just the sides and this is not as difficult as you think it is. You also get to hide any (small) mistakes in the middle of the joint.

    finish for shooting board

I like to wax the lower section that the side of the plane rides on. No need to finish the rest of it.

    Canopy Roof Matterial

What's your shed roof made of? Can you use the same to make it look a bit more joined up?

    Startrite Bantam/Mercury transport

Yeah, that's a good point regarding a fairly minimal set of tools. Will have my 7 year old helper with me, so will be aiming for the boot rather than the back seat.

    Startrite Bantam/Mercury transport

Thanks, so no tools required then to lift of the head? Not sure it'll fit unless this comes off.

    Startrite Bantam/Mercury transport

I've just won a Startrite Bantam bench drill on ebay. It seems to be a Mercury head with a shorter pillar and no rise/fall table. I now have to organise how to transport it in the back of my car. Am I right to assume that the head loosens/comes off with the lever on the left, or does this...

Any chance your TV has a power saving measure that turns it off after some period of time?

    Woodworking dangerous? Try gardening!

"The nurse said she'd seen many a fork through a foot,..." Yep, I managed to do that in my youth. Made a right mess of my wellies. To the OP, hoping your mate hasn't taking too much of his fingers. Either way, it's going to be a bit awkward for a while without the use of either hand.
