    Spalted Sycamore Box

Once again a lovely piece of work. If I could pass comment (though I am not sure its warrented) I think it would have been nice for the internal part of the box to be in a more mundane timber to really highlight the beautiful spalting. Owen

    Which First Workshop Machine?

Think I have to say planer thicknesser, It saves so much work. I always by rough sawn and planing it all by hand was enjoyable but crippling. Its much easier to cut stuff by hand when the starting stock is square. Plus the cost is soon saved when you think how much cheaper rough sawn timber is...

MHG Bevel Edge Chisel Set @ Rutlands

I always think of it as best on test of the editor of the catalogue. It makes a bit more sense like that. It is slightly misleading but I have to say that the design on the rutlands catalogue is first rate and I like getting it through the door. I know people have had issues with them but I have...

    Selling one-off pieces?

I have noticed a few craft shops at stately homes and garden centres have a few pieces. I imagine they take a cut for selling it but the price is set by the maker and the item is left at risk in the shop. I would think smaller shops would take a punt if there was no risk or outlay to themselves...

Buying stuff at harrowgate show thing.

Have been researching the internet with avengence. However they the exhibitors have bothered to turn up at a show and i always feel that is worth supporting as these things tend to fade away if people don't buy stuff. I am not sure we have any good places to go in Nottingham (though it could be...

    Which plane to use

Well the boards were some fairly cheap pine which i used straight form the shed pile without rethicknessing them. I then cut the housing with my 18mm cutter, some boards fitted some didn't. Also some of the boards had a slight cup. The project was to make a bookshelf over a weekend which bar...

    Which plane to use

I have been trimming down the ends of some boards to slot in a housing I have cut into a bookcase. I have used a record 044 to cut cross grain with the line heavily knifed to prevent tear out. This obvisually is workable but less than ideal. My question is, which plane is best utilsed for this...

BUYING WALNUT AND CHERRY FOR THE FIRST TIME PLEASE HELP

Seems about right from what I can see. It was similar to what i paid for some cherry last week. It is pretty expensive. Owen

    Should I feel guilty?

You have twisted my arm. I will give it a go.

    Should I feel guilty?

Yeah, the cherry bothers me the most. I think i have that image of a man with a massive lump of wood and 3hours later he has a matchstick proudly displayed. I really wanted thinner timber but I could only get this or 1inch stuff and for what i want to do it was easier to buy just one thick...

Iroko & Sycamore - Arts & Crafts Side Table WIP

Really impressed with that. Its a really attractive combination of timber. It reminds me of San Francisco. Its has a European and oriental flavour to it. Most pleasant. Owen
