    Clever engineers

My grandad worked at Accles and Pollocks in Oldbury and told me that story about them putting two tubes inside the thinnest tube. They held the record in the 1960s

    Clever engineers

Although they were often known as Tangye’s of Birmingham, their factory was actually in Smethwick (my home town and proudly not in Birmingham).

    Reducing spiciness?

Can we add some yoghurt to the BBC Rant thread? Couple of spoons in the sharpening and bandsaw guide threads too!

How would you paint these ?

I worked for 25 years in the paint industry and that is the worst spray painting I have ever seen.

and i thought making dovetails was hard

And it looks cool. Pask is great by the way. Creative thinking outside the box. He likes problem solving more than woodwork I think. I agree on the weakness of narrow cross grain in that joint, but you can’t deny it looks great.

    road cycling

I usually cycle on roads where I’m passed by a car every ten minutes or so, single carriageway country backroads. I often can’t hear cars hanging back 20m or so due to wind noise, so the mirror is a godsend. You can see a car 100m or further down the road and act accordingly.

    road cycling

I really liked the mirror I got, maybe I just dropped lucky. It’s just sensible being aware of what’s around you. You’re not going to be able to read a number plate in it, but at least you know when you’ve got an artic up your backside.

    road cycling

I did a bit of road cycling a couple of years back for fitness. Never rode in a group always solo and never really had many problems with cars as long as I acknowledged their patience when I was difficult to pass. One thing that worried me at first was not really being able to see what was...

    Kitchen and utility refit WIP

Great stuff. Thanks for documenting this. I’d really like to do my kitchen when I have the time, so I’m learning tons from the detail you have included.

    Anyone got a Breadmaker

I buy the tins of Allison’s dried yeast and once opened, I keep it in the fridge. Not sure if it prolongs the life, but it lasts well. It takes a couple of months for me to get through a whole tin. Also, measure flour/water by mass (grammes), not volume. It’s far more accurate and easier.

    Anyone got a Breadmaker

Yes, the larger loaves from my Panasonic are too tall, so they are awkward to slice evenly.

    Anyone got a Breadmaker

I also have a Panasonic...though they appear to have gone up in price. https://www.johnlewis.com/panasonic-sd- ... lsrc=aw.ds Bought 4 years ago, and I think I’ve bought three loaves of bread since (e.g. coming back from holiday and not wanting to wait 4 hours for a slice of toast). Breadmaker...

    Any boffins here?

Easy enough to test it out. You can reduce PVA viscosity pretty easily by adding small amounts of water. If there’s less and less ooze, then that supports the hypothesis.

    Any boffins here?

Because the PVA is viscous it takes time for it to move. The PVA inside the bottle falls down inside the bottle displacing a bubble of air upwards (because of the comparative buoyancy of the air). The bubble rises into the conical nozzle and speeds up (due to the volume being constant , but the...

    46 minutes of beautiful craftsmanship

Thanks for reminding me of this, it came up on my recommended videos and I meant to watch, but forgot. Especially as I’m from Smethwick originally.

    46 minutes of beautiful craftsmanship

I happened by this video today. Ruedi Kohler makes a bucket. Doesn’t sound too appealing, but it’s one of the best craftsman videos I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen more than a few). He was an 87 year old Swiss cooper when it was recorded in 1992 and he makes a curved wooden milking bucket entirely...

    Milk Paint.

Caught this video on painting spoons using milk paint yesterday. He discusses the properties and use of milk paint as well as a couple of different UK suppliers. Might be of interest to you? https://youtu.be/RGVE5m4M2xc
