    Saying Goodbye

Just have to let him know you're there for him. Chat, tea, that sort of thing. I've got a neighbour that's gone through the same thing as me last year. I just pop round and chat about lathes and crap cars, helps us both out I think.

Glad I didn't bid on that now!

    Saying Goodbye

Have written and deleted about six different replies to your post, none of them right...I guess that's just it, there's nothing you can say to make things right. All things must pass, it's the only certainty we have in life and it's the one thing we're all running from. Tom sounds like a top...

    Machine wax

Need to be careful with silicone near anything that you want to apply a finish to. When i orked in the automotive industry, the paint sprayers had a list of banned personal care products (certain deodourants, hair products etc.). If they used them they used to get cratering all over the cars...

    Football

I think we've had a reality check and it's done us good. We've realised that we aren't in a position to take on the big boys toe to toe at the moment, so we've had to roll our sleeves up and graft out a result. If we carry on we might over achieve for once!

    Saying Goodbye

It's very hard saying goodbye. My wife died two months ago from cancer at the age of 43. Time is a river that pulls you forwards. You have to go with it and enjoy the ride, you can't cling to the rocks. My thoughts are with you and your friend.

    Football

Yeah, deliberate back pass = keeper cannot collect with his hands. If the ref decides that the ball was accidentally passed back to the keeper, then he can collect with his hands. E.g. A deflection off a defender's foot or a sliced clearance. This avoids the ridiculous scenario of a defender...

    Magnetic magic.

If you look down the pipe you can see the magnets spinning in the opposing magnetic field. I trick the kids at school by doing the same thing with a plastic pipe. They rarely see the magnet I've concealed in the hand I'm holding the pipe with!! Here's some more magnetic freakiness using...

    1/2 a Sauber F1

I took my 10 year old son to the Damien Hirst exhibition at the Tate Modern yesterday. Lots of parallels there!!

    guitar repair

Fair enough, admittedly, my acoustics are pretty basic. I've only got a couple with solid tops and sides. The cheaper guitars which get the most abuse are ply, which will be more stable any way I guess. Also, although my house is centrally heated, it's pretty old with no DPC, so I guess acts as...

    Dovetail issue.

I had a similar problem with one of my first projects in reclaimed sapele. I ended up forcing the joint together and splitting the wood in half due to mis-alignment of the pins and tails! I had to disassemble the joint, glue along the split and then ease the pins. These Internet gurus make it...

    guitar repair

Budget guitars are often built in the same factories as the more prestigious guitars. The difference being material specification and QC, both of which come from the brand. Another influence on how good the guitar "feels" is the retailer. Good retailers will adjust neck relief, action and nut...

    Spray painting advice

Just some random points(not in any order): Keep the gun moving parallel to the piece. Try to keep overlaps even. Set your spray pattern by spraying with the gun static onto a piece of newspaper for half a second, you want an elongated ellipse. if it's not right you need to change the...

Hello.. How would you make this?????????

You might be able to make an adjustable jig for holding the strips in the correct shape based on an acoustic guitar jig like this: The bars move in and out in slots and are held by wing nuts on threaded bar.

Hello.. How would you make this?????????

I'm sure there was a thread on someone producing something similar for a garden bench about six months ago... Will have a look for it. Edit: Grrrrr! Can't find it! Anyone else remember it? Think it emphasised the vertical pieces rather more than the designs above. Really like your bench one by...

    Irish Cabinet Makers

I used to hate these dreary programmes when I was a kid...what was the one with jack Hargreaves (?) smoking a pipe? Now, of course I can't get enough of them! What a gem.

Corrodip --------- OK WHO WAS IT ????????????

My home brew version certainly contains acetic acid. I would guess that others do also, although the acids my be fully or partially neutralised. I know at least one is pH7 (neutral). Mine is pH 4 and if I leave parts in for an extended period some bubbles of hydrogen gas will form indicating...

Corrodip --------- OK WHO WAS IT ????????????

From reading their literature...Evaporust is also a chelating rust remover (like corro dip). They have an alternative chelating agent and also an organosulphur compound that regenerates the chelating agent theoretically making it last a little longer. I would imagine that it would yield similar...

    guitar repair

Got to say the quality of cheap guitars now vastly exceeds that of the budget guitars available when I started playing in the early 80's. I can buy a better guitar now, for the same price, than I could then. Given inflation that's incredible! Can't say the same for a pint of beer or a ticket to...

    Luthiers Friend - Inlay

Oooooh! I like that. Got too many no.4 planes... Are the squares decoration, or part of the construction? Loose tenons?
