    Forum for proffesoonals?

Professional - someone that gets to use the special door at screwfix :) Wasn’t a sub forum suggested some time ago? It could be called “trade talk” or something. There’s something sensitising about the word “professional” for some reason I don’t quite understand. I for one really appreciate...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

The reason I mentioned chemical fixing was when I was considering dowels at an angle, so there wouldn’t be a thread to grip a standard rawlplug. I’m going to try a keyhole fixing on the vertical sections now and hang onto standard screws into rawlplugs. If that’s not solid enough, or it makes...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

I am going to be attaching to the vertical sections so that wouldn’t be such a problem.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Sorry, only just noticed this question. I’d say 15mm is plenty robust enough, 12 might be ok, but 9 is going to be too skinny. The limiting factor is the length of the free horizontal shelf at the end. Because I have used halving joints, you only have half of the depth of the shelf to support...

Haha, not the first time I’ve had that. He’s been copying my style for years now.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

The shelves are 1.8 by 1.2m . I thought they were heavier, I must have cut away more than I thought. I had to cut two pieces from a second sheet, but I guess there’s a lot of waste when you’re cutting half ellipses . Plus all the cut outs for the joints...and the chamfers of course!

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Yup, blasphemous! :D They would be visible from the front. Some sort of keyhole hanger is the winner I think. I’ll probably try to make them myself if I. Can find some brass or steel plate.

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Yes, that type of thing would work, but that one is too wide. It needs a 15mm hole and the ply is only 15mm wide

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Yes, I’m coming back to the keyhole hangers I think. Just weighed the shelves on my bathroom scales and they are 22kg

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Many thanks for that. I think you are correct about my suggestion, it will be very difficult to get things lined up and will involve a lot of faff, but that seems to have been an inherent part of this project anyway! I think I will try it and if it goes wrong there is nothing lost as I can just...

    Elliptical shelves WIP

Been thinking about fixings and I’d really like to avoid a false back on the shelves if possible. I’m pondering if it’s possible to have dowels set into the wall using a chemical fixing. They would be angled upwards and match corresponding holes drilled into the vertical sections of the shelves...

    Which Vacuum cleaner

Only got experience with the dyson jobbie (dc35 I think). Had it for about 7 years and it’s been great. I thought it was on the way out recently, cutting out intermittently, but it was the battery getting to the end of its life. I bought a higher capacity replacement from amazon for £20 and it’s...

NICEST Town to Live in if you want Weather/Outdoor stuff?

Milton Keynes area is good for cycling and they have the red route cyclepaths all across the city. I’ll admit that it takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s much nicer than its reputation.
