    Ground Beams — Shambles

Nothing wrong with Resident Engineers crawling over everything :) Actually my inspectors did most of the crawling while I tried to keep the client happy. Dubai Marina was one of my little projects.

    Ground Beams — Shambles

I'd say when the level of the concrete stops going down, showing that it has fully gone into the spaces between the rebar. It's easy to tell the difference between this and the natural spreading of the material (and vibrating should not be used to move concrete around within the shutter)

    Refinishing old decking

We painted the tannelised boards with Cuprinol Anti Slip paint. The deck is in full sunlight (towards the south of France, so intense) but the paint seems to stand up well to the uv light. It can be easily overpainted if needed without a lot of stripping back - unlike some of the other products...

    Rant about screwfix

I keep the only card I actually carry in an RFID blocking pouch. They are as cheap as chips from the big river.

    Refinishing old decking

I just redid our 30m² deck and laid the boards smooth side up. There was a bit of a web debate on this a couple of years ago. I think it looks nicer, and will be easier to recoat when the time comes

    Ground Beams — Shambles

Water sitting on top of setting concrete is not a problem. In my days of supervising some pretty large pours in the Middle East (up to 10,000 m³), it was compulsory to put a sand berm around the top surface and keep it filled with water for a few days. Either that or keeping wet hessian over the...

Cottage back door for the M-I-L

I'm not sure if this is the recommended way, but I put the door side on first with the frame side folded down against the edge of the door to get the pin position constant. Then use wedges to hold the door central in the frame and fix the frame side part of the hinge.

    Lets talk about Jeans

Strange - I've been wearing 2 pairs alternately for 5 years with absolutely no issues. I'm not a construction pro, but they do get hammered around the house and garden. Maybe quality has dropped off recently.

Look at the Duluth Trading site. They do a cloth which is very like heavy canvas

    Hunting masonry drills

My first post ever on here was to try to source a speed regulator for a Spit 385 which turned out to be a Bosch GBH 8 DCE. There are parts available for such old models (so you might be able to source a useful SDS+ chuck). Unfortunately, I was never able to find the speed regulator, despite...

    Hunting masonry drills

If it helps, I think that Spit drills are rebadged Bosch. Might take a bit of Googling to find out the equivalent model.

Mitre saw options between £150 and £250

One of the advantages of living in a 300 year old stone house is that you can point to not quite fitting woodwork and say "well of course back then they only had blunt hand tools to work with", even if you did the work yourself the week before using the best that modern technology has to offer...

Extracting Rusted Furniture Bolts From Outdoor Furniture

These work well, and there is a "mole grip" version as well (second link) https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NBSVYOY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B07677TBQ6/ref=emc_b_5_t

    Made or Built

I used to work as a civil engineer in the Middle East. We had to source some manhole covers for a project and it was mandated that they had to be made in the country of use (the UAE in this case). They also had to carry the BSI kite mark to show that they complied with British Standards. The...

    Velux Repair help

Luckily I have an epoxy wood (filler) shop just around the corner. They will cut the epoxy to any size you want 😁

    Home Lift

We bought my mum one (not a Stannah which had a long delivery period) from a fast talking shyster who rolled up in a new Jag - very flash Del boy type. He measured up and called his office to find out that they coincidentally had one that would fit with a few minor alterations and could be...

    Velux Repair help

This will probably get me shot down in flames, but here goes...I'd just treat the wood with wood hardener, maybe with some drilled holes and a small syringe to get it in deep. Then use epoxy wood to fill the hole. If it's not leaking then that should work, for a year or two anyway. I remade...

    Connection problems

We (in France, admittedly) went from 40 Mbps to the promised 400mbps when fttp came in a year ago. Since then it's crept up to 520 Mbps as measured on my Eero mesh system. I don't really notice much of a difference in day to day stuff. Web browsing might be a bit quicker, but not much. Downloads...

    Adjustable vs Fixed Spanners

I have a set of Metrinch sockets/spanners. I saw them on a tv advert when I lived in California and thought they might be good for old Brit cars - and they are. They fit everything, and I've never had one slip.
