    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

For all sorts of reasons I ran out of WIP steam (no surprise there!) but I have today finally finished the table, - pictures below (taken in my 'finishing room' which SWMBO wants back as her dining room). Have to say that I'm rather pleased with it and almost hope the client (MiL) won't like it...

    Breathing dust

I'm with Karl, - I find this very hard to believe. A single weekend? Where did he work, what did he do etc. etc. that also contributed to his condition. That is in no way to say that the subject of dust shouldn't be treated very seriously.

    copies

As someone who is genuinely cr@p at designing stuff I nearly always 'copy' from others. Sometimes a big chunk and sometimes a smaller chunk. Rarely a full, direct copy without changes in one form or another. Does this mean I've broken copyright? My stuff tends to be fairly generic as I...

    Laminating an oval

I'm in the process of laminating (well, - trying to!) an oval frame, - just over 12mm thick. The former is made and I'm cutting and 'regularising' the strips to about 1.5mm. Appears to go round the former OK but I seem to remember reading somewhere that wetting the outside of the strip will...

    Cleaning up glue squeeze out

This is titebond brown, - on nearly all occasions I use a damp cloth and wipe until all traces are gone. Never had a problem afterwards. I'm now reading that this is highly likely to soak into the wood and affect any future finishes although I've never had a problem. Recommendation is to wait...

    I love my router but...

I will quite often spend longer setting up than it takes to do the actual cut but I think that's just a function of machinery based woodworking. There's also the issue of tolerances but I won't go into that here as it's been done recently. Do you have any tools were you can just turn on and do...

Have we lost the plot as far as tollerances are concerned?

All the previous responses are wrong, - it's the look on the wife's face after I've visited Axminster!! I tend to agree with others on this. If it looks right and feels right then it probably is right. Whilst I do own digital measuring devices I rarely use them preferring instead the old metal...

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

You're bloody telling me!!!! Can't remember ever spending so much time thinking, figuring out and then thinking again and refiguring. Still, - saves me having to talk to the wife :D :D I really do love reusing old timber and turning it into something new. Currently have quite a store of...

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

A while since I last updated but I've been busy working quietly away on the table. I managed to overcome the problem with router settings (thanks to Steve M - again!) and the sliding dovetails have been cut. First with a 12mm straight cutter to cut all 4 initial rebates As I'd used a 12mm...

New US Table Saw injury report & statistics....

If you're sad and want to be genuinely mind boggled by the sort of things Brits can hurt themselves with them go to http://www.hassandlass.org.uk/query/reports.htm Used to be an annual publication but probably too much effort these days. Woodworking type issues about page 150 ish of the 2002...

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

And so it goes on .... Progress has been slow for all sorts of reasons but I'm getting there. Pedestal is finished size at the dovetail end. Managed to get and extra 5mm diameter to help with more wood between dovetails. The small 'shoulder' to the right hand end is deliberate to help...

New TS Coming Soon from Charnwood

No it pigging well doesn't and in my humble opinion it is a serious drawback, - getting height and angle sorted is a right sod. The current design has changed slightly in that the handle now has a brass insert with teeth as opposed to the plastic ones that get knackered very quickly. I don't...

New TS Coming Soon from Charnwood

Same with the 419 - I'm not a fan of this type of operation. I suppose all will depend on the price?

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

Thanks for the comments - apart from feeling a giant pratt no real harm done and a really valuable lesson learnt (duck quicker :D ). Olly, - I've redrawn taking account of your thoughts, - a socket depth of 17mm. Gives me something like 9mm between widest points of the dovetails. I've also...

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

First update is rather a list of disasters and c0ckups. I'm developing a love hate relationship with sketchup - love what it can do and how it shows what something will look like. Hate the fact that no matter what I do I just can't seem to get to grips with it and that the smallest model takes...

    Quicker Setting glue?

Just a follow on from Olly's post. Why does 5 minute pva state: Setting time 5-48 hours Initial Tack time 5-10 minutes Setting time 4 hour firm bond, 24 hour full cure Could I be excused for thinking this is anything but 5 minute glue?

If you need to push an Axy order over the £50

I can beat that - went for some shallac and came back with a planner thicknesser :D :D

    Quicker Setting glue?

I've given up on PU glues mainly because of the clean up required. It takes ages and you have to remove every last speck or it shows under the finish. PVA for me with a damp cloth now. I'll be looking at the 10 minute pva's with interest as I have some glue ups soon.

    Pedestal table WIP - Finished!

Thanks for the initial thoughts. I wouldn't do too much breath holding waiting for progress as I suspect this is going to be a long job with all the other 'stuff' I've got to do this year. I reckon you missed your calling Tom, - you should've been on the stage :D Clearly the length of the...
