check out this tax rebate -

Think you'll find that's the other way round. Most mortgages for couples are joint tenants but it's tenants in common that helps with protecting the survivors estate.

    Ceiling coving

Thanks all. Yes it is plaster coving and I have a multi tool so that bits OK! Not sure I understand the 45 degree comment but as you say just have a go. I have got some spare so a **** up is a part of the learning process. Those corner things aren't for us. We don't have them now and I'd...

    Ceiling coving

We've had a false chimney breast installed together with a gas fire. I'm going to fit coving to make it fit in better with the rest of the room and need to 'mitre' the new corners to give a seamless feel. Is it best to try and 'scribe' the new coving to the old (doable I think with a bit of...

    'Clear' non yellowing finish?

Further thanks for the responses. It looks like I'm likely to stick with my tried and tested methods of danish and shellac. I really don't want to experiment with finishes on good work and chance ruining it. I may experiment in due course and will do a bit more reading and research first.

    'Clear' non yellowing finish?

Thanks for the responses. I've tended to shy away from water based finishes as I tend to find they leave a rather 'thick' coating that looks and feels artificial. Perhaps it's been the product I've used (floor varnish). Any particular product to consider? I prefer wiping on rather than brushing...

    'Clear' non yellowing finish?

I'm a bit of a danish oil aholic in that it tends to be my finish of choice for most things. It does however noticably yellow quite quickly on light woods. Less of an issue on darker woods but I have some light wood projects on the go and would like to preserve the lightness for as long as...

    Patching a concrete floor

Phill, Hardiboard is a trade name for cement backer board, other makes are available! If you've got a gap under the bath does it matter? Just use some batten to raise the bath if necessary.

    Patching a concrete floor

Phill, You can get self levelling compound that will do that depth, - I looked into it recently for one of our duff floors e.g. https://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-ultrap ... 25kg/4959f That size might work out expensive but I would have thought it a better option than a DIY concrete one as this...

    Any opinions on smart meters?

We've had one for about 12 months now. Not experienced any issues and I've found it useful to have a better idea of what we're spending but I'm not a slave to it. It'll be interesting to see what happens when we almost certainly change supplier next year and whether that'll cause any issues...

    Manufacturing plywood: Then and now.

Noticeable lack of people in the modern factory, - that's progress! Roger, - not much H&S in the 50's, staff were more expendable back in the good old days!

    Glass shelf sizing?

I'm looking to install glass shelves using this type of bracket (or similar): https://www.sdslondon.co.uk/fixed-shelf ... glass.html Plenty of brackets to choose from but I've not been able to find any advice on how deep I can have the shelves. Clearly given the cantilevered design there is a...

Why does everybody get angry easily these days?

Who said I'm angry? I'm just completely disagreeing with a silly statement you made, - doesn't make me angry. Perhaps a tad imbecilic for arguing with you but we all have off days :D

Why does everybody get angry easily these days?

With respect utter cobblers! My expectations of chimps is ever so slightly different than from human beings. And laughing at angry people is a recipe for something far more serious.

Why does everybody get angry easily these days?

I was just about to blame the teachers :D But seriously that's where it starts. Teachers hands aren't just tied they're then riveted and super glued. Everyone (well, nearly everyone) goes on about their rights but they're always forgetting they have responsibilities as a member of society...

    Alternative to knotting liquid required...

I can also vouch for Zinsser BIN having painted a load of cheap cladding with plenty of knots a few years ago. No sign of any discolouration even now. It is expensive though, - circa £50 for 2.5 litres when I bought. If it's just a small panel shellac would work (and is cheaper!) but will you...

Any insurance recommendations for a learner driver

That is scary! I suspect it makes some far more tempted to drive without insurance.

    Litchenberg Wood Burning - dangerous

Whilst it is without doubt a tragedy for wife/children I think you'll find there are a number of people who will find humour in almost anything (me amongst them). This stems (mostly) from our own life experiences and has nothing at all to do with a sensitivity bypass.

    End caps on hardwood worktop

Steve, From memory the side of the cooker is almost exactly level with the worktop. This means the trivets (or whatever you call them, - the things the pans rest on!) are just slightly higher.

    End caps on hardwood worktop

I fitted Worktop Express oak worktops next to a big gas range cooker in my daughters kitchen about 3 years ago. The gap between cooker and worktop is fairly tight (no more than 5 mm) and so far no sign of any heat related damage.
