    Work Shop Insurance

Stuart, I found myself in a similar position and as a hobby woodworker with some nice gear have found it almost impossible to get what I would call reasonable cover at reasonable cost (I know, reasonable to one is cheap to another and vice versa!). The truth is you can (generally) get...

    table saw blade

Bob, - were you happy with the finish when you first had the saw? If you were then get your current blades sharpened, - it can make a significant difference. Many people (including myself  ) don't get them sharpened often enough!

    The uprising has begun!

That bloke with the tube is gonna be the first to get a robot fist in his gob! :D :D

    Prototype workbench build - WIP

Matt, - interesting build and nicely done. Really can't believe that's a prototype, - that's a bench that'll outlast you!

Optimal depth of tool stands for stability

As well as the weight/CoG of the item you need to consider the forces you/it are applying. For example, turning a decent sized bowl will mean you're applying a degree of force to one side of the lathe, - this needs to be counterbalanced somehow or you may have a brown trouser moment! What about...

    Forum changes

Might I respectively suggest you reach behind you and gently pull your underwear out of the crack of your arse? It appears to be causing you some discomfort :D :D Ah , - Dave Gorman - a genuinely funny man.

British Gas customers, check mail carefully

We’re BG as well although we manage our account online. They no longer hold on to your money and have to pay back overpayment once a year (usually August). I wanted to build up some credit for the winter months and they insisted it be paid back.

    New bandsaw: setup and expectations

Can I also suggest you let Axminster know you've got a problem? They are (usually) incredibly helpful with aftersales service. You really shouldn't have to do much fiddling on a brand new machine. I also wouldn't do too much 'tweaking' until you speak to them (they may just swap) as you may...

Show me your double garage workshops!

No pictures I'm afraid, - anyhow I'm too embarrassed by the current state of the place! I also can't find my sketchup drawings. It's basically a big square about 5 x 5 metres with the table saw/take off/assembly table down one side. The space in front of the saw doubles as a place to park the...

Show me your double garage workshops!

I think as always it depends what you have and how you use it (cue 'Oh Matron' comment). Think about what you do and the workflow you need to try and avoid frustration. Mine is a double and as I have a large table saw that was the prime bit of kit I wanted to place where I could make maximum...

    Buying kitchen units

I have on more than one occasion saved several hundred pounds and on for one well over a thousand (including appliances mind). As I said, the unit quality isn't what it used to be but by the time they're screwed to the wall there isn't an awful lot between them all.

    Cleaning cast iron TS tops

In the absence of diesel I use white spirit with fine wet/dry or webrax. A good wax afterwards keeps it clean and aids wood moving over the surface.

    Buying kitchen units

We're now on our second B&Q (gasp!) kitchen and if you can get your mitts on a Tradepoint card (or know someone who has one) then the price can be hard to beat. The quality of the units has declined since our first one but still very reasonable. Hinges and drawer runners are (were?) blum so...

    Ceiling help

One of the ways taught in my very old readers digest book of DIY is to pour plaster of paris from above to 'refix' the plaster. It basically forms new keys above and should hold it in place. Good clean before hand to remove all dust etc. You can also add scrim if you want to strengthen the pop...

    Sawdust for Pets?

Are you serious?!! If it’s as lethal and highly toxic as you state then we are surely all doomed! Perhaps you might like to qualify that statement just a teeny bit?

End of another Tour de France and Sky/Brailsford. Clean?

I virtually laughed out loud when I heard that a bunch of MP’s had written a report that criticised someone else’s morals and ethics (hello pot this is kettle, over!). Unfortunately I think they’re probably right and sky appear to have been removing the urine in relation to TUE’s and medical needs.

    Work benches...

30 plus years of marriage and that one still works for me!!! Many years ago there would have been a british standard for such things and if you didn’t fit then tough luck. Thankfully we now know far more about the ergonomic issues that go with life and would be advising people to make sure...
