    Shop Vac advice sought

As a fully paid up member of the tighter than a ducks arrse society I empty my bags several times before final disposal. I suppose on average I get about 5 uses before I have to bin them. Empty before they start bulging is the key, - little and often. With ebay type bags this isn't that bad a...

    An English Mount Rushmore?

Just back from a good wander across the pond and we visited Mount Rushmore simply because I'd always wanted to see it. It got me thinking about the 'contents' of an English version. I've given no thought at all as to where it could be just the contents: Firstly, - Her Majesty the Queen...

    Moving my workshop 200 miles.

When I moved a couple of years ago I used a commercial firm and I made sure they knew exactly what my requirements were and they quoted accordingly (I have some heavy stuff as well). Yes it cost me but it was done in a oner and they did a superb job (and on their insurance!). If you’re going to...

    Bandsaw on a trolley

I’ve got a startrite 352 on a home made trolley and wouldn’t be without it. Like most workshops I simply don’t have the room to leave it in a fixed spot and still be able to use it as I wish. Mine is simply 4 castors mounted to a piece of mdf and it works a treat. As Phil says it does mean the...

Benefits of using a smaller saw blade on a table saw?

This one https://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-i ... h-ax649822 is about 2.9hp if my conversion is right (2.2kw) and it happily cuts 100mm oak. I've never even thought of running a smaller blade and have to say that I don't find blades that expensive but sharpening isn't cheap (around here...

    optimising a cutting list?

You any good with sketchup Bob? I find it useful for helping to work out what I need (together with the inevitable pencil and paper!).

    What to do

Bob, Don't agree with any of those. If you want your views on the record then reporting to the police is fine. And a solicitor will do feck all to prevent it happening to anyone else. I don't think your rationale is 'modern world' at all.

    The nutters are back ....

Sorry but I don't agree with you. It isn't the TT that brings out the morons on their twatasaki 9000 and matching leathers, - they're out as soon as the sun starts shining. We live close to a popular route to the coast and there's a nasty bend and railway bridge towards the end of a fairly fast...

    Samsung TV fire

Glad you're OK. Can I suggest you report full details to your local trading standards? They may be able to determine if this is a larger issue with other known incidents. It's only by this type of reporting a fuller picture of such issues can be built up.

    Oak Chair - Joinery Complete

Nice bit of work John. I like the way curved rails help 'lighten' a piece, - something I do quite a lot. Have to admit I chickened out and bought a set, - mainly because it would have taken me ages to make a full set.

    Planer Thicknesser

Paul, My table saw runs off a dedicated 16 amp supply and as you have a spare way on your consumer unit it should be straight forward. Run a single 2.5mm cable from the unit to a 16 amp socket and jobs a good 'un! I did mine myself then had it double checked by a proper sparks just to be sure...

    How crass are Highland council

The local councils hands were mostly tied with planning permission having previously been given by a Scottish Government official http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-h ... s-44144245 And unless you have definitive proof those either 'suggesting' or stating bribery is involved should wind...

    Post office

Their second class parcel service is p1ss poor and in my experience always takes far longer than they say (2 to 3 working days my @rse!). Give it a bit longer before you write it off.

    (Finally) Bedside tables

I really like those. Out of the ordinary and different. Do you have any plans for feet or will they sit flat on the floor? Not just furniture either!

    New surface planer from Axminster

Don't think it's that new, - I've got virtually the same model sat in my garage! Have they just 'revamped' it? I'll leave comments on the wrong style of push stick for a surface planer to others :D

How Many Dovetails Make A Joint ?

Can I respectfully suggest that there is a massive difference between some of us 'weekend warriors' and the likes of Custard, Mike and Jacob who have almost certainly been through a 'proper' training process and subsequently cut more dovetails than I've had hot dinners? All I can say from...

It really boils my pee when I have to pay to print out a ticket at home! Trouble is there is usually no option or you pay exorbitant postage

Better grip on steep garden path

As Mike says there really isn't such a thing as 'non slip' just some surfaces offer more slip resistance than others! One trick I've seen used to reasonable effect is a good pressure wash, - enough pressure to remove some of the surface and leave a more resistant top layer. Depends very much on...
