    anyone work with perspex?

Might have to put a chrome bar through it to prevent the perspex collapsing under the weight of the bottles. Seems a bit 1980's to me! Steve

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve - remote switched sockets are your answer here, something like this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/home-easy-rem ... -kit/55334 You would still need to get up to the ceiling to change the plugged in appliance, but if you are running static machines from the ceiling sockets then this is not...

Bosch oscillating tool blades - why so stupidly expensive?

Whatever you do avoid the Erbauer ones from Screwfix - they fit the Bosch pattern but wear down incredibly quickly.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Depends - if you have square edged PB then plastering the whole lot is necessary. With tapered edge PB you can skim the joins after taping as there is enough depth. I prefer to plaster the lot (or more accurately get someone who can plaster to do it!) so I get an even paint finish that doesn't...

    Secrets of the castle

Yup, it was interesting. The stone step end I presumed will be in the outer wall of the staircase, so no need to dress the end of it. Would have liked to see more of the grain chest build (how were the holes drilled and the dado's cut?). Looking forward to the next in the series - a total of 5...

Advice for small, "In the House" projects, please!

Erm, not quite - some of the models can be museum quality and are certainly not matchstick made :) Take a look at: https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/brands/billings/ These are either plastic hulls - like big airfix kits - for the more modern tugs etc, but I presume you are more interested in...

    Electrical question

+1 - permissible cable runs are vertical or horizontal, but NOT diagonal. As for jointing cable, a crimped connection is preferable, but personally I would be happy leaving the existing box with a terminal block inside and a blanking plate as a cover - this is then accessible if necessary. The...

Advice for small, "In the House" projects, please!

I would vote for a scroll saw or how about changing track slightly and looking at wooden ships or similar? Plank on frame construction, kits come with pretty much all you need (Billings is the name that springs to mind but I am sure there are others) but require considerable investment of time...

    Craft education.

Arden - no woodwork yet, but he has only been there since September. I am sure he will be itching to use my tools as soon as he does some however (Dad - can I use this old Blue Spruce Chisel for my homework )

    Amazon postage

Been like that for ages (year or more) - you simply have to select 'super saver' for free delivery. Allegedly takes longer, but not as long as they quote in my experience - sometimes they deliberately send 'super saver' items a day later to make the difference! Steve

    Craft education.

Bit harsh - my son started secondary school in September and has been doing cooking every week since then, taking in the raw ingredients and coming home with a finished product each time. Nothing too fancy - savory rice dish, cheese sauce, cous cous, pasta and veg etc but he does cook it and...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

One solution to the plasterboard problem is to cut the boards in half and then put them up - cut line hardly shows and if plastering not an issue at all. Just costs you a few more screws per board. I have done this when handling boards on my own for ceilings. Steve

Where can I get thin nails?

I get them from Wickes of all places - they do panel pins in a range of lengths at 1.6mm diameter. Steve

    Sash window weight pockets.

Mine are to one side (the inside of the parting bead). The outer weight is then reached through the same pocket as there is no baffle/divider where the pocket is. Steve

Anyone else fly radio controlled quadcopters/multirotors?

Cool - now make a skin to look like a Star Wars speeder bike from Return of the Jedi and you are good to go :) Steve

    Antikythera mechanism

Lots of details on the web, including proposed gear layouts and the wikipedia page has a reproduction photo from a 2007 model - not quite sure you will be the first to build one for 2000 years I am afraid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism While it was indeed technologically...

Why not use a bandsaw to rough out the blank? Got to be easier than using a duplicator! Steve

    GP £55 perk

Dementia is not a single disease, and it cannot be 'cured' by a magic drug, therapy or treatment. Dementia is essentially a loss of function in the white matter in the brain and can have multiple causes as well as multiple severities, aetiologies and pathophysiologies. The primary cause of...

    Exquisite engineering video

A new watch by Patek Phillipe - only 7 to be made. Exquisite engineering hidden behind a terrible case (IMHO!) Video on the making of the movement and watch below: http://www.boreme.com/posting.php?id=41205#.VD-CockhBH8 Makes me want to buy a metal lathe and mill :) Steve

    sash cords and parting beads

Pin the parting bead at least - very easy to remove with pincers or similar later if necessary. Steve
