A phantom bit of space history on Google Maps...

But is (manned) exploration of space really a top priority given all the other demands on national budgets - the US still doesn't have a functioning healthcare system, fully paid maternity leave, is falling down the educational league tables and has failing and crumbling terrestrial...

Windows 10 free for one year

We were discussing this at work. Consensus seems to be that when writing code for earlier versions of Windows, developers used the shortcut 'if OS = 9* then do x' so that they didn't have to distinguish between windows 95 and Windows 98. Now it has come back to bite them because calling an...

    Whodunnit? Answers added.

A stab at some of those as yet unanswered! 6 - the stranger was a doctor 8 - she was a skydiving instructor 16 - it was a submarine 20 - they were a cat and a goldfish 22 - his parachute didn't open 27 - carbon monoxide poisoning 29 - I know this, but it is a very long, very convoluted answer...

Windows 10 free for one year

Lets face it - no one will buy it in the first year unless they are a complete geek, or are forced to by it being bundled in with a new computer. This is Microshafts way of getting a larger install base for their latest bug-filled security flawed operating system ;) Steve

Why engineering should be a woman's game

Someone who has a chip on their shoulder about other people calling themselves 'engineer' ;) Steve (speaking as a scientist in a medical school, where the medics all think they can do science simply because they cure (or bury) patients!)

    Cheap Piller Drill Lidl

Looks like a keyed chuck in the picture - always a pain when the chuck key fairy pays a visit.....

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

How many times are you going to catch something on the bottom of the keystone before you trim it flush with the architrave Steve? ;)

    Change of direction!

Doesn't sound like you have large pieces of equipment (the lathe is presumably a poolewood lathe, rather than a metal turning pultra lathe, who also had a model 15/90 lathe). Probably suitable for spare room or even loft storage in boxes. Don't be too hasty to sell would be my opinion - you will...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Hi Steve - just for reference, after loads of looking/research on my kitchen before I fitted it, Wickes were the only people I could find that did 18mm backs (same thickness as the sides) and this was from their ordered rather than 'off-the-shelf' range. B&Q kitchens were awful (the showroom...

    wwoden models

Nice models - but very much doubt he kept making them a secret. Plans for these are widely available, although the best site seems to be www.toysandjoys.com. I have made a couple myself. Looking through the pics you would need a fairly comprehensive workshop - a lot of the pieces for the models...

Arnold Laver (Reading) - hardwood price

Are you paying a premium because you want it 9" wide? I tend to buy at 6" wide, but that is because I only have a 6" planer! Steve

    planing bank(table)

Rubber wood is soft - we had a cheap coffee table made of that (According to the sticker on the bottom of it) and it marked at the slightest knock. Steve

    Boiler move and replacement

Had a boiler moved from downstairs to upstairs and a bit of new pipework in the summer. British Gas engineer who services the boiler told me not to even ask British Gas as their prices were so extortionate! First quote we got was from a Cambridge plumber who priced on Cambridge prices - £4K plus...

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Coming along nicely Steve! Have to admit the before and after shot posted by Greyorm does make the new structure look huge, especially when considering the view of the houses behind. Yet it looks even larger on the inside - I reckon you should paint it Blue and call it the TARDIS :) Steve

    Garden Buildings Direct

It is a standard cheap shed - they all tend to be made to the same spec of the same materials. I had one from them and it was fine for what it is - if it lasts 5 years then you will be doing well. You can upgrade them by using better felt, or EPDM for the roof and line the walls internally...

    Carbon Dating.

Carbon dating requires carbon - thus rock cannot be carbon dated :) Essentially carbon dating can only tell you when something died eg when a tree was felled and stopped incorporating carbon into its tissues. Thus if you carve something on an old piece of timber you are correct in that carbon...

    black friday

Chaps - black Friday is a marketing gimmick. Big news in the US, bandwagon jumping in the UK. Got some old stock you want to get rid of - call it a Black Friday sale. Got some old model stock you need to shift before the new model comes out - ditto. Axminster are currently offering 15% off bosch...

John Revell and his cup !!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty sure John Revell was part of Steve Wrights 'Posse' when he was on Radio 1 in the afternoons, then went on to do his Friday night 'wheels of steel' programme. As for his show, it is aimed at beginners rather than experienced woodworkers. His series on setting up a workshop contained some...
