Record CL 1 main spindle and bearings

+1 for what Dominik said. If the only problems are the stuck centre and the mangled thread these can be fixed one way or another - much cheaper than getting a new spindle made from scratch. Maybe worth posting in the metalworking section - there are folk on here with metalworking kit/expertise...

Pillar drills: Silverline 262212 vs Sealey GDM-50A?

No, they are not the same thing at all - but how does that relate to the question?! The point I was trying to make was there is significant difference between input watts (what racks up on your leccy meter) and spindle watts - what mechanical work a motor can do. Most specs seem to quote...

Pillar drills: Silverline 262212 vs Sealey GDM-50A?

Like others I'm not keen on Silverline's offerings - but £89 inc delivery for the OP's machine ( FFX price) isn't to be sniffed at. You can pay almost as much for a 350W Watt motor alone from Machine Mart. With decent tooling these machines can be made to work, as the OP has found. The thing...

    help identifying a taper

Have you examined the markings on the existing chuck? Just had a look in my chuck drawer and they all have the taper and capacity stamped somewhere on the body, even the vintage ones. Bob.

    Elu Lathe

If the OP is happy with a B18 chuck, the soft arbor suggestion looks good - less machining than making a sleeve, so cheaper - and one less bit to lose! It's a nice idea - wish I'd thought of it when I had a similar problem a while back, so thanks from me for that! Robin.

    Elu Lathe

Looks like minilathe's idea could work with a B18 chuck though! I haven't got one to check, but it looks like B18 is the 'fat' end of MT2. Robin.

    Elu Lathe

That would be an excellent plan were it not that that it's the thin end of MT2 which corresponds to B16: If minilathe's Jacobs chuck isn't suitable RDG do a 3/4 inch parallel shank B16 arbor which could be sleeved up to 29mm fairly easily I imagine. There's a good chance the shank will be...

    Elu Lathe

From the exploded diagram of the lathe tailstock given on the webpage Sachakins linked to, it looks like the tailstock is made to accept parallel shank accessories secured by a screw rather than the more usual Morse taper arrangement. If so a way forward may be to buy a generic parallel shank...

    aluminium shavings wanted

I 'isolate' brass turnings for this sort of use (by others, not me). At the mo I have only a small bag, about 50g: It's leaded brass, so cuts really easily. If that's any use, PM me and I'll bung it in a Jiffy bag. Rob.

Source of pinned blades or a decent adaptor?

Thanks. I was half thinking that as I have metalworking equipment I could knock up some adaptors myself, given a proven design, but at ten quid for a pair for the Axi ones it's not worth it. AES - not teaching granny at all, I bought the machine years ago to make decorative features on some...

Source of pinned blades or a decent adaptor?

Thanks for replies. The saw: The blade holder (looks the same as whatknot's pic): The style of adaptor I have: The reason this came up is that my daughter asked me to make her some 'sock blockers' - a commercial example: My version will be far less detailed, but I'd like to be able to...

Source of pinned blades or a decent adaptor?

I have Axminster 'Hobby' machine which I bought maybe 7 years ago for a specific job. It did the job (internal cutouts) but I got very frustrated because it takes only pinned blades, and at the time I couldn't find much of a range - much more variety with unpinned blades. So I bought 'adaptors'...

    Tool making advice

Tris, if you're planning on hardening the tool something which Tom doesn't mention is that it's better to harden the steel before making the cutting edge by grinding if you can. The reason for this is that if you heat the pre-shaped tool in a flame it's all but impossible to get the bulk of the...

    Cold blue (blu) liquid.

This is interesting to me. Do you use the full 'kit' (alkaline degreaser, blacking fluid, de-watering oil) or just the blacking fluid? I can't imagine there's any special about the degreaser, but de-watering oil? Might WD40 work? Bob.

What size of chuck to get ?

You won't be able to hold 52mm (or anything like) in the inside jaws of a 65mm chuck. You might just get away with it with outside jaws, but the Chronos offering in your link doesn't appear to be supplied with a set, and it doesn't look like the jaws are reversible. RDG do something similar with...

A dilemma 8" grinder vs 2x72" Belt grinder

I have an 8" bench grinder and also a 2" belt linisher - not the 72" you're looking at, just a Sorby EdgePro which is designed primarily for sharpening woodworking blades. The Sorby gets used for all sorts of things apart from its primary use - grinding metalworking lathe tools, sharpening...

    Kity 419 tablesaw tilt mechanism.

Thanks for the (unlooked for) testimonial Mock - just glad it works. For anyone interested, the gear I used was a commercial 12T MOD 2: It was a bit of a gamble, but it seems to have come off. Bob

    Firewood and chainsaws.

Reminds me of a one star review on Screwfix for slot head brass screws - didn't fit his pozidrive bit and had a distressing tendency to shear.... Rob.

    Firewood and chainsaws.

Thanks for comments - it sounds like the Titan will do what I want. I am just standing in one place in the yard, so no need for portability and I'm not dealing with massive logs - 10" diameter maximum. There are some negative comments on the Screwfix site about the supplied chain and complaints...
