    Dovetail (rip) tpi - suggestions?

The 15 tpi Adria seems a bit brutal on stuff under 10mm; it appears filed at somewhere around 10 deg, with no fleam. I've added about 10 deg of fleam at the toe which seems to make starting easier. I was hoping when recutting the x cut 'peg' teeth of the worn but newly aquired d/t saw to a rip...

    Dovetail (rip) tpi - suggestions?

Some time ago I followed Bob Wearing's advice and recut a small tennon saw to 10 tpi rip for cutting tennon cheeks. More lately an Adria small tennon came my way, which is 15tpi rip, very nice, but a bit coarse for d/t in lighter work? (The Adria d/t saw is also 15 point rip). To what rip tpi...

Spiers Improved Mitre Plane - questions

It's not actually true that "all acids dissolve everything". Whilst common acids will dissolve some steel an well as the rust, this is not true of phosphoric acid. the phosphate of iron is insoluble, so a coating builds up on the surface of clean steel* which eventually stops further action...

    Horizontal workholding on the WoodRat

Yes inded, Escudo! Super T track? Not sure where to find that? Tony, re big T nuts, nowhere handy to post pix. I just used some ply scrap, and put rebates on opposite sides, so it will slide along as per cam clamps. Approximately square with a central hole, has a pronged T nut insert pressed in...

    Woodford machinery.

Sounds really good buy! Presumably there's a machined spot underneath to bolt/clamp router to - is that drill and bolt, ot clamps? How thick's the table here - ie how much plunge do you loose? How big's the hole for big cutters? What sort/ size of inserts? Happy routing!

Problems in the bedroom (easy now...!)

Sorry didn't make it plain; the dunlopillo matress is a 'firmrest' and is made to sit on top of a rigid unsprung base - a sheet of chipboard 1500x2000 or whatever with holes in. No slats nowhere, Guv. If you had slats, the gaps between would provide the necessary ventilation.

    Horizontal workholding on the WoodRat

Looks good, Tony! I copied Alf's design (on Aldel's website) which has a tendency to droop a bit. Added extra fixings make it some what like yours - I find big ply T nuts that slide in the cam clamp channel a useful way of adding security to all sorts of jigs. Slide out r/h cam clamp, slide in T...

Problems in the bedroom (easy now...!)

We have a 1500mm dunlopillo (latex) mattress, and Dunlop specify 18mm chipboard under, with holes (3/4" @ 9" centres I think). Holes are necessary to ventilate the mattress (as the actress said to the bishop). I think a centre support might be necessary....

    Festool and Retail Price Maintenance

We live in a society that works on the basis that competion generally makes best use of scarce resources, so any attempt to reduce competion between manufacturers or retailers is made illegal. Incidentally I believe Festool pricing, whilst top of the market, is closer to competing brands in the...

    Hock plane irons

Having spent part of the day job in industrial training, for what it's worth, good craftsmen can make excellent instructors, and properly presented his 'automatic' skill should inspire, not frighten off. However passing on practical skills is a skill in itself which needs teaching to the...

    DC's new Wenzloff dovetail saw?

David mentioned in F&C a few issues ago that he'd taken delivery of a new DT saw and had asked that nice Mr Wenzloff to tooth the saw for dovetailing lighter stuff, UK makers tending to lighter drawer construction than all they dollar ex-colonials. Could you tell us how he cut teeth for you, David?

    Woodford machinery.

Had my eye on one of these since I 'won' a Delta 1/4 hp baby power feeder, thought "now I can climb cut on the router table". Alas still waiting for SWMBO to request a little break up north....Can you tell us a bit more about it?

    Festool Vacuum Rip Off!

Sony got caught out by a Watchdog (or similar) reporter telling a discounting tv dealer to stop or loose the dealership. Festool stuff is extrememly good, but for a fairer cost comparison, lookat US prices. Even there they appear to control prices as (a) you pay festool direct not the dealer...

    tufnol

I get mine from http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/home.php?cat=4814 seems more resonable than some, and carries .pdf data sheets. The more expensive version is fabric reinforced and stiffer. How thick? depends on how much support you intend to use (think webs in an iron table casting) Some...

    Tool Price Inflation

When I looked through the latest Axminster catalogue I thought quite a few prices had jumped up by double figures %. And they're publishing at about 6 monthly intervals now. Your block plane should be just below £80 with tax and duty, although if you order just one, I think you'll get charged...

    li ion,ni-mh,ni cad?

My oldest 9.6V Makita stick battery is marked 1997, so 11 yrs old. The low power may mean a change in battery performance is easier to spot? NiCd life depends a lot on the charger, which as someone said above has to work on a 2 steps forward one back basis, the small amount of regular...

    Self build table saw

A bloke who'd built a sliding table saw all of wood (!!) wrote an article on it, which is in one of Taunton's "Fine WoodWorking On" series, it was "FW on Making and modifying machines". There is no tilting arbor. Should give you some ideas. There's also a review, which said 'it rips beter than...

    Festool Vacuum Rip Off!

The vac might not be a rip off by any definition - Nilfisk/Alto probably sell a lot more blue ones than Festool do of their coloured 'copy', so the Fesool version is bound to cost more. Festool's real rip off is the difference between US and european pricing.
