A bit of tool ID help needed

Thanks guys for the info, especially re the sash pocket chisel. I'm a bit unsure why my GU told me he used it for splitting out grounds as I know for sure he made many a sash window in his time. It could obviously be down to old age and general booze - related addlement (he recounted a story of...

    Table Saw

Ever since watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZHPg22TYS4 I've defaulted to unplugged rebates and grooves unless doing more than an hours worth. The lack of screaming motors, whizzing blades and droning extractors make such a nice change, and I'm convinced that it's not really...

A bit of tool ID help needed

Here's a few items from the weekends haul. Up first is this I Sorby chisel. The iron is very thin and all my Great Uncle could tell me is that he's had it since he could remember and always used it for splitting wide wedges to use as grounds for fitting door linings. I'm wondering if anyone...

    A bittersweet tool haul

Regarding the fettling, there's going to be a fair amount to do. Unfortunately another relative had a good rummage through the workshop a couple of years ago and left everything in a state of disarray. The tools had originally been properly packed away in Oil cloth etc. A leak in the roof for...

    A bittersweet tool haul

This weekend I was able to spend some time with an elderly relative who retired some 15 years ago after working all his life as a joiner/cabinet maker. I won't go into too many details but the story is rather sad as this chap has had a hard life, battling with alcoholism, rejection, loneliness...

Any ideas who made this drill?

I picked this up over the weekend as part of a much larger haul (more in another thread soon) and spent about an hour trying to figure out how it works (it's not as straightforward as you'd think). I'm sure some of you are familiar with this type of manual drill so tell me, what's it designed...

    Cutting Kitchen cupboard doors

Presumably they don't have standard euro 35mm cup hinges fitted? If so, take one off and you can see what the door is made of. Then proceed accordingly.

    Mft hole jig on YouTube

I recently had a 8 x 4 sheet of 25mm MDF CNC'd as a bench top for my main assembly/outfeed/tracksaw table. I thought this would solve a lot of my problems regarding accurate crosscuts (I also have a set of Parf Dogs and the Veritas Bench Dogs). At first I was in crosscut heaven but then the...

    Which new chisels?

Not that I'm a major chisel aficionado or anything, but I use a set of Narex 8116 bevel edged for most things in the workshop (Marples Splitproof for site) and Narex 8862 Mortice for making 'gert big 'oles in wood. I'm a bit of a beast with tools and tend to give them a hard life but they're all...

First kitchen build and I have a few questions!

Personally I've never bothered making cabinets with anything other than butt joints screwed up. I use Spax M-Cut MDF screws (pre-drilled and c/sunk holes) and it's always worked just fine for me. If you're not planning to use end cover panels then obviously that won't work for the last unit in a...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Prepped the strings and newels on Saturday, routed and assembled on Monday, fitted this morning. One of those oh so wonderful jobs when it all goes EXACTLY to plan. We rocked up with the staircase on the roof of the van at 10:00 and drove away at 14:30. Happy days.

Will this work or am I barking (up the wrong tree)

Like your thinking there Paul. I'm in the workshop tomorrow to finish off a staircase and will hopefully have some time to have a go at making Sled MK II. I may well have a go at a variation of your suggestion. Will post results (if there are any!!)

Will this work or am I barking (up the wrong tree)

Altering the outfeed table is a no-no for various reasons. The solution has to be efficient as it's a working shop and time is money.

Will this work or am I barking (up the wrong tree)

I did think about this but it would involve a lot of buggering about for all sorts of reasons that I won't bore you with. I was thinking that the runners would be free to slide in both slots - the ones on the saw table and the ones on the sled. Once the sled has been pushed a certain distance...

Will this work or am I barking (up the wrong tree)

Having recently made my first crosscut sled for the TS (no, I don't know why I didn't do it sooner) I've become something of a convert. Sled MK I was knocked up in 20mins to do a particular job and worked very well. Then it was adapted for tilted blade mitres. Also worked great. Then the...

    Saw Advice

Definitely. Plunge saws are becoming extremely popular in all areas of woodworking - I know site chippies who use them and fine furniture makers. They save time, are very accurate and are a viable alternative to a table saw. Just make sure you get a good one (Festool IMHO)

Domino jointer instead of morticer and tenoner?

adidat - I agree with you on the door front. I've made loads of doors, both internal and external as well as gates and even a set of full size up and over wooden garage doors for a double garage. I've yet to have one fail on me (and yes, I am in reasonably regular contact with 90% of the owners...
