    Coffee table WIP (ish)

I thought you might all like to see a recent commission (sorry, that sounds pretentious) for a client - a 7 sided coffee table. The table is made from Euro Oak and measures 400mm wide, 700mm long and is 450 mm high. The boards are 27mm thick. Essentially the table is half of a Dodecagon plus...

    Fitting cabinet doors

Thanks for that Mahomo. The finishing plan was Tung oil and then wax, although I'm thinking it's time I tried some Oslo stuff having heard so much positive noise about it. Not quite sure yet which of their products is best suited to work like this.

When did the world go mad for Festool?

+1 With a max crosscut of over 640mm it's invaluable for kitchen work. Like Pete says there are other ways of doing this but IMHO there's nothing that is this quick, accurate or portable. The stability has never been an issue for me as I mainly use it for crosscutting and holding work for...

    Fitting cabinet doors

Chippy1970, I have got a rail saw and I did consider doing it this way. I guess it's a quick way of getting the job done. To be honest most of my more 'traditional' projects start out with me being all enthusiastic about doing it 'properly' and then either stall due to lack of skills or end up...

    Fitting cabinet doors

I've almost completed a Shaker Style Hi Fi cabinet for SWIMBO (Shaker style HiFi cabinet - hows that for an Oxymoron!!) and have just done a trial fit on the doors. Whilst I'm not too displeased with the fit in general it would seem that the meeting edges need to have a leading edge planed onto...

    4ft x 8ft workbench

I have two benches in my workshop - one is about 600mm deep and the other is a full 1220 x 2440 like yours. If you have access all round the bench you'll love it. It makes clamping and assembly an absolute breeze. Last year I re-arranged my workshop and pushed the 8 x 4 bench up to a wall. In...

Kitchen cabinets - paint first or after build?

In my experience nearly everything I ever do takes 10 times longer than I'd hoped.

    what drawer runners...Blum, Hafele?

Personally I stick with Blum for runners etc, mainly because a few years ago a very nice rep gave me a whole load of installation jigs FOC. I know jigs are easy to make but having the real deal from Blum is nice. The Movento runners are lovely to use with a considerable amount of adjustment...

    Saw Bench modification

I guess I was wondering how easy it would be to fit a new arbour/arbor to the motor, thus avoiding any worries about concentricity or threads coming undone. Any ideas anyone?

    Saw Bench modification

Thanks for that Deema. The current arbor is 30mm. Presumably you're describing a 'sleeve' type arrangement which would therefore increase my arbor diameter?

    Saw Bench modification

I have an Axminster Trade Series AW12BSB2 saw bench and would like to try and use a dado set with it. Does anyone here have any experience of changing the arbor(?) for a longer one in order to accommodate such a blade? For the record, I have the engineering skills of a tree stump. Also I'm...

When did the world go mad for Festool?

I'd be keen to know what the Festool doubters have to say on the subject of Lie Nielsen planes over other brands. Or Maguire workbenches. Or Moore & Wright squares etc etc. I own a single LN block plane (a gift) and a Moore and Wright square (boot fair find for £2) but neither can do anything...

Cutting 55mm hole in laminated plywood

A spade bit will tear it to shreds. Use a router and a template as described above by the others

    ROS

I've got Festool RO DX 90 and love it. Only problem is that no-one else sells 90mm discs so you're stuck with Festools own which ain't cheap. I've also got a JCB cheapo from B&Q for next to nothing that's also pretty good (125mm) What this tells us I'm not sure.....

    Miter saw advice

I use an LS0714 and love it. Crosscut is 300 Depth of cut 52 Not quite as impressive as the LS1018L but much more compact and easy to lug about. Only £250 ex VAT as well.

    Is this a dangerous cut?

I don't consider myself to be lazy or stupid, but pushing the end of a rail across a moulding head with push sticks would surely be more dangerous. Doing it by hand gives far more control and the hands are well away from the action. How would you use push sticks to do this?

    Is this a dangerous cut?

So I tried a false table and voila - safe, smooth and easy. Thanks for the advice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Is this a dangerous cut?

Thanks for the answers guys. Some more info - the workpiece is a rail for a door - I've got about 18 to do both sides so 36 passes of a 100mm workpiece. The cut will be hand fed - fingers will be over 150mm away from the cutters. Shaw guards won't work/will obscure the cut. I don't have an...
