What tool did you buy today?

A Crown Tools 3/4" square end scraper. Cryogenic HSS no less (whatever difference that makes) Also a 75mm Axminster screw chuck and a couple of spare screws. I know it's not hard to make your own but being a 'pro' woodworker I've got stacks of money to burn   Translated this means...

    Face side

I'm with Sgian Dubh on this one. Until I've got my timber down to size I don't really know which boards will look best together. We mark Face Side and Edge for machining references and then once the timber is thicknessed and finished to width we layout our boards and then re-mark everything...

What I have learned today (or recently)

I like that. I have an evil oval skew that glares at me every time I turn something - "please play with me" it says. I put my fingers in my ears and go wah! wah! wah!

    Full MDF Internal Door

20mm thick solid lipping. Leave the stiles and top and bottom rails overhanging by 10mm all round to create a groove all round the outside. The lipping should then be tongued into this and glued with a D4 glue. I know it sounds a bit flaky, and it certainly isn't the ideal way to go about doing...

What I have learned today (or recently)

Today I learnt two things. 1. Don't daydream and look out the window when using a belt sander. 2. When you are turning a bowl and need a 62mm spigot on the base so you can chuck it, 60mm is NOT close enough - no matter how much you tighten the jaws. And a bonus third: 3. I know far more swear...

    Full MDF Internal Door

Definitely. Also it'll give you a fighting chance of getting a mortice latch fitted.

    Full MDF Internal Door

You most certainly can. I've made three of these for my workshop. As long as you lip em up as you said you'll be fine.

Which first, Osmo worktop oil or siilicone?

Sand back the Osmo, repair the Silicone, then once the silicone is dry re-osmo-ify the thing. The silicone will debond from the Osmo in a heartbeat.

    Paris Attacks

Couldn't agree more. I grew up in a Christian family, which I have to say was OK. I have my own faith, although it largely centres around the teachings of the New testament, sermon on the Mount etc, and I keep a healthy distance from most manifestations of organised Christianity such as Church...

Making a Rebate Plane with Paul Sellers

Chisels booked. I'm off down the workshop now to re-watch the vid and translate it all onto a worksheet ready for next weeks evening sessions.

Making a Rebate Plane with Paul Sellers

Watched this vid this morning and I'm definitely going to make one (or several) Does anyone know if the Lidl chisels are wooden handled? If so I'll get a set to cannibalise for these planes.

    Weird Waste Pipe Woes

Sounds to me like it will either be due to thermal expansion of some sort or suction/vacuum problems. I don't know much more than that but most of the pipe noises I've come across in my time have been related to one or the other.

Book Review: The Essential Woodworker by Robert Wearing

I think that one of the issues here is with time. The average hobbyist has time on their hands. The person earning a crust from making has to get the job done quickly and efficiently if they are to make money from their work. When I need to learn something new the internet can, as Custard said...

    Paris Attacks

On a side note, watching the news and seeing that Jihadi John got a hellfire missile where the sun don't shine I noticed looking at the TV graphics that there was a building labelled ISIS HQ. What I want to know is why the f&$k is that still standing?

Round Table question - An Update.

I've had a quick look at the Epifanes stuff. This looks like the varnish to go for As for the thinners, they seem to have several. The first one listed states that it's pure white spirit. Isn't this just what decorators use to make a mess of customers sinks?

help needed - blocked waste pipe

Excellent news. Seeing your arsenal of new anti-blockage weapons made me think of American Military tactics - shock and awe. Your blockage didn't stand a chance.

Round Table question - An Update.

Thanks for the comments guys - with the talent present on these forums praise given on here is very welcomed. Customers are often the easiest people to please (or at least some of mine are!!) but praise from fellow makers is praise indeed - it means a lot. The brief from the customer regards...

Round Table question - An Update.

One final question on this for you all.....Does anyone have any ideas about what I could put on as a final finish coat that would offer weapons -grade protection without to much faff. It's currently been subjected to 3 coats of Osmo Polyx Clear Matt (as is nearly all of my work these days..

You could try these. http://www.amazon.co.uk/3M-8110S-Partic ... B00GOAG98M I did some disaster relief work several years ago and these were being worn by the school kids. We handed out hundreds of the things.
