    Price for door

Probably about £1200 -£1500. Painting always makes me go expensive - I don't have a dedicated space for it and it stops me getting on with other stuff which makes dust. I hate it. With a passion. The more I think about it the more expensive I get. It's just gone up to £1800........

    SCMS

I've got a Bosch glide thingy (the big one) and it's a great saw. The advice given is always clamp work, cut on the push, let the blade stop. With my 1st fix heritage I gleefully ignored all this and wondered my my cuts were not of top quality. Once I'd followed the advice given I now get...

    House demolition

I'd contact London Reclaim http://www.lrbm.com and have a chat. Won't cost you anything and you never know....

£50+VAT For a scribing tool? Really???

I don't think it's designed to be used as the photo shows. The pencil holder is articulated which would allow you to tip the whole thing towards the line being scribed, thus keeping the plastic well away from the wall and the pin in contact with the wall or whatever. I've used one to scribe...

    Milling countersunk slot

You need to look at this from a different point of view. If you can afford it then the only thing you really need to worry about is...can SOMEONE ELSE make an incontrovertible case for you NOT buying a milling machine. If not then get one. Deceiving oneself is perfectly acceptable when it comes...

£50+VAT For a scribing tool? Really???

I use lolly sticks and a pencil pushed through a hole made with a bradawl. Sharpen the lolly stick to a point and scribe away. Although I think I've run out of lolly sticks.

    Milling countersunk slot

Just in case this hasn't already been pointed out, anything that's fixed through a slot rather than a hole can move, so you may end up back where you started after a load of milling and countersinking.

    working out prices

Working out a price for anything you are making is in theory extremely simple. 1. Cost of Materials. 2. Cost of Labour. 3. Overhead and profit. Add them together and thats the price. It gets more complex on items 2 & 3. You need to accurately predict the amount of time spent on the project...

    Milling countersunk slot

I would go for new holes in the timber casement. Either use one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/veritas-plugger-476056 or drill 5mm holes and glue in some hardwood dowels. Once dry chisel them flush and off you go. I recently had to re-hang a hotel's worth of doors that had been hung too...

    Phone upgrade time...suggestions please?

iPhone. I've had one since they came out and am now so utterly wedded to the apple ecosystem that I couldn't easily change. Not that I'd want to. Ever.

    charging for EXACT time?? ....

How much did the materials cost? (or how much would they cost if you bought them - thinking you may have used up some of your own stock here????) How much is your hourly/daily rate? How long did it take you? Do the maths..... ...bingo!! Thats the right price. Unless you want to add on profit...

    Shoulder Plane Question

I have the Rider 3 in 1 and it's the second one I've had. It may be going back. It also suffers from the extremely slight non-co-planarity (is that a word?) of the iron supporting bed with the sole. Also the blade is MUCH too override. A smidgen I could understand but 2mm? So don't buy one of...

how much do you add on for materials to the customer

It's absolutely standard practice but most people don't talk about it to their clients. I understand that she's a good client - a 'friend' almost as you say. However in my experience even clients like this are looking to get the best deal and don't like paying more than they think they should...

Let's be Honest -can you even make money from woodworking?

AJB, you need to know that one of West Kent's best Cafs is on the Transfesa estate at Paddock Wood. I haven't been for about three or four months (too much 'Lard around the middle' according to the Head Dietician) but the last visit was truly memorable (as visits to transport Cafe's go).

Handy hint on defogging your car

I drive a 1987 Landrover 110 Defender. De-icing/De-fogging routine is simple - wait until spring.

    Interesting book

On the subject of firewood, from someone who burns about 4 tons every year, the way I deal with mine is as follows: Logging is done over the winter. Logs are about 12" long and are always split unless less than 4" across. If you peel a strip of bark away it'l help with drying. Split logs are...

    Buying advice please!

For the projects you've listed I'd suggest the tracksaw and a long rail and a decent jigsaw. That and a good selection of well chosen hand tools as previously mentioned and you'd be off and running.

Taking my business forward. How and do I need to rethink?

Flanajb, my two cents worth. I think the designs are great. The fact that they are based on similar items is irrelevant in my view. You've made them your own. Probably agree with the others that the website needs a lick of professionalism, both on the general design and photography side. I...

    new years workshop resolutios

Try and improve the dust situation. I just got back from being abroad for Christmas and the New Year, having left the workshop at a dead run on 23rd Dec. Went down to there today and the place is absolutely thick with dust. So the Festool budget is being re-allocated to some better/more dust...
