    New workshop

Almost exactly the same for me. Yesterday, 9mm birch ply £46.35 plus vat. In April, £27.45 plus

... and me! (making it as we speak - except it's lunchchtime...)

    18g 18v Nailer

Well... I hadn't done it before - and I do miss it! Whether I make it worse because I use a Badaptor, I don't know - but the lack of ability to stand up bugs me.

    New workshop

Need to do some cladding. Front of our dormer house. It is south-facing and the previous boards have only survived three or four years. I never knew wood could curl quite as much as that... What's the best material to use? It's not a vast area (c. 8m x 1.5m with three windows) so material...

Blocking a cooker air vent, wasp entry

Had a wonderful time with my father some 60 years ago... We had a large wasp nest (in the region of 3ft long) in a roof space. They were eating too much of the orchard, so it had to go. He rigged himself up in some home-made bee-keeping gear; rubber gloves, tucked-in sleeves and trousers -...

Talk of new benches has got me wondering

Every bench I have made has the vice (standard Record quick release) on the right. But, then, I am left handed. Working at a standard right-handed bench has seemed awkward for me ever since school days (where the school workshop was equipped with a couple of benches for left-handers - so I got...

Steroids, indeed! But your photo looks to show just the sort of panels I'm talking about, both down the long side (with French cleats attached) and the end (complete with nifty paper towel holders) (For me, the thought of a bench that size, taking off across the floor like Torville and Dean...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

My Dad (rest his soul) had a single word for work benches. Triangulation. However good your joinery skills (and especially if they aren't!) , the joints on a bench will work and move a bit - and lo! You have a wobbly bench. (Hands up those on here who like working on a wobbly bench...) He...

New member with a simple question

My timber supplier (and many others, I guess) calls "Plain Sawn", "T&T" (through and through). Confused me when I first met that! (Just like, in my early days of dealing with computers, I never found any translation if those strange initials, "IT"!)

    18g 18v Nailer

A good friend advised me: If you have a tool that's less than 6" high, you need two of it. Unless it's red In this case, lurid green has a similar effect (but I can still lose it in the chaos that's my workshop!)

    Carbide question

This is getting off the wall... Where does Yorkshire pudding come into it all?
  12. Woodchip Wilbur

    Carbide question

The words that I use seldom have any meaning. St Francis is attributed with "Preach the Gospel at all times; use words if necessary". He didn't say (or write) that but the sentiment is his. I'm sorry that I sometimes find it necessary to use words...

He did say, "welding effect". Would you buy something that offered "oak effect" and expect ... ;):D

    Phenomenal work

Not very sure that I agree with you in this particular example - but in general, yes, indeed. I have a little laser engraver (not powerful enough to cut) and a FB group I am on is full of folk, proudly showing off 3rd-rate renditions of photo images on canvas. Surely, if you want an image on...

    what width Marking Knife?

An ex-medic (of a sort), I have used Swann Mortons for 60 years! My standard go-to is a 3 handle with an 11 blade - but a 10A is certainly a bit less "wobbly" in use. A great advantage is that, when I leave one lying about (as I do! I need at least four or five about the place if I am ever to...

You may not know this handy tip.

It had never occurred to me to do it like your first picture!. Now I'm disappointed - I don't get a nice Handy Tip!

    1st Compressor & Nailer Issues

... and here is me, getting very satisfactory results from my Ryobi battery-powered beast!
  18. Woodchip Wilbur

    18g 18v Nailer

Can reply as I'm using the Ryobi with a Badaptor... It works great! Not really wobbly. Yes, you can wobble it a bit but it's not noticeable. The adaptor sits in the tool and the battery just slots in as if it were 'native'. And - more important - the nailer seems to work well. No jams yet...

Decent casters for mitre saw cabinet

That comment comes at a really good moment!! I'm just making an extractor beast - see the YouTube: Go about 11.5 mins in. A couple of wheels fitted at the back will save a lot of precious space. He's got castors on outriggers to save height - I am short of height and width so your solution...

Decent casters for mitre saw cabinet

I've never liked locking castors. However good, the table/sled/saw station always wobbles. I put my t/s/ss on unlocked castors with a cantilever system that either pushes the castors down to deploy them or pushes small legs down to lift the castors. Most of mine are hidden away inside the...
