    The Grammar Thread

Well... That's a pretty extreme example of parents "over-helping" with homework!

+1 ! It happens roughly monthly - when a nuanced comment arrives from Sartorial Quality Control

... and I thought it was for a little girl doggie. After all, it's covered in "bitchumen "! ;)

Noob tipsfor Laser Cutter / CNC for woodworking?

The fumes from cutting PVC are especially damaging. Even with extraction the hydrochloric acid it produces will burn away your extraction unit as well as the laser set-up as well. Don't Laser PVC!

Adapt and Survive. In woodwork as well.

Remarkable! As many have said, one of the limiting factors is your (forced) choice of materials. Your work is never going to look as good as it really is if you use the plywood in the photos. Can I make a suggestion? You are not needing huge pieces of timber and, for someone with limited vision...

    Fire Extinguishers?

Different situation, I know - but our church insurer says that the best way to use any extinguisher is to hurl it through a window and use the hole to make your escape, letting the professionals deal with it. Powder in a heritage location is a disaster alll of its own.

    Black Friday Sale is Here!

Well... I was delighted to have the opportunity to browse through a lot of tools. The fact that most were ones I never knew I needed - and many were ones I couldn't afford on my Pitiful Pension is, genuinely, irrelevant. I enjoyed my browse and welcomed the post. It was a shame to note...

Novice question for edge gluing boards

I've done a job somewhat like that, though not exactly as you describe. The brief was for a single "worktop" c. 800mm wide and about 6500mm long, to be fitted in a house on an island some 150 miles from my workshop. I made it from relatively narrow (150mm) elm boards with two random...

    Rope Warming

Popping up on my Black Friday Deals this morning is a "personal desktop heater". It's 500W, ceramic and with a thermostat and fan. It will fit in the space at the bottom of my tube, it has overheating and tilt protection - and is under £20. As Jane Eyre didn't quite say, "Reader, I bought it!".

I was pretty sure there'd be another ringer here!! You may well not need rope warmers (or driers) - but we proudly hold the prize for "The Coldest Ringing Chamber in Yorkshire"! Mind you, as we all came out of lockdown, and with all of the talk of build-up of CO2 and aerosols, we suddenly...

Well worth a thought... I wonder - does it need to be buried in soil (in the same way as a fish tank heater must be submerged)? Is this something that will get past the H&S officer* and the PAT tester? :dunno: *Oh, yes! That's me!

    Rope Warming

Not easily. It could run the length of the tube - but then the tube would have to be bigger to accommodate the ropes, the tube and a guard to keep the ropes off the hot tube. That's a rebuild - but crucially, it makes a bigger, more difficult object to manhandle in a limited space. Ian, I've...

    Rope Warming

I think that you are pretty well correct - but not totally. If a device is giving off 100w, 100% of this is emitted as radiation - but only some of that (OK, OK, almost all - but not quite!) is heat. There is a good deal of light emitted that escapes the box through the open base (and is the...
