Good resources for first wardrobe build

Freebird Interiors on YouTube are great for this. Alistair has put loads out about how he does it, for nothing, but with a lot more if you 'buy him a coffee'

How do I calculate board thickness/strength for a project.

Hard to give a definitive answer on the first question because there are so many potential variables involved. If you're unsure of things on a given design, then that's where mock-ups and tests come in. Your edge thickness, however meaty, doesn't have to be consistent through the whole table...

Aye. They'll be in the restaurant/bar as you go in, full of different wines. Red in the smaller front ones (room temp) White in jackets to keep cool at the back. Then the Sommelier will presumably tell you which wine goes best with your chips. 😊👍

I made a couple of tables for a bar, one of which is a very long (2.6m) 'Sommelier' table which for the un-cultured like myself, is a wine expert. They're not fully finished yet. They'll be ebonised, bronze socks painted onto the tapered legs and a cnc cut fluted surround apron fitted onto...

How do you do it? Your business

I use similar. QuickBooks. I can snap a photo of receipts and upload them and as if by magic, they are entered into my accounts. I go through it all once every few weeks and categorise everything. Car/van Goods to sell on Office equipment Etc, etc. I invite my accountant to share and they pull...

How do you do it? Your business

A bit harsh. It's rare to start up and know everything. It's a bit chicken and egg. When I first started quoting, I would sit and picture and write down every single solitary process involved in making something. Ripping down boards - 45 mins Planing/thicknessing - 30 mins Marking out - 1hr...

How do you do it? Your business

Trouble is when I take an early afternoon to get on the laptop, I tend to fall asleep as soon as I sit down 😂

How do you do it? Your business

Well, I'm similar in that I absolutely hate quoting. Particularly at the moment when everything is just so expensive, I almost give up sometimes as I know the final figure will sound ridiculous. Often I'll reduce the rate I work for to make it sound more acceptable. I know I shouldn't do that...

    Wood worktop problem

Don't do this. Absolutely no need to break rule 1 at this stage. It's unfortunate, but it's wood and it can happen. Being right at the end it would be possible to replace that one section, but if they're not interested, fill it with resin and get on with your life, would be my take.

    Cold workshops and hot houses

Tis done! I made it and have had it sat in my lounge for a couple of weeks just to try to prevent any nasty surprises when it goes into the clients home. So far no issues 🙏

Framed, ledged and braced door in prime European Oak. Tongue and groove to the back.....or the front.....depending how you look at it. 😉

    Push sticks again.......

When I was teaching furniture making in a college, I was already starting to see the effects of a diet of North American YouTube. Some pretty terrible examples out there influencing beginners.

    Cold workshops and hot houses

This is my thinking in the most. It's a difficult thing and it's why I normally shy away from doors if I can as you so often have to revisit them. In this scenario though, where it's not fitting in a frame, I feel like the worry of that is maybe slightly reduced. Although, not that much...
