    fixing into 12mm MDF

Thanks xy, I could do that, I have a groove cutter for my router, one that is normally used for cutting grooves for biscuits.,that could be a better approach than dowels, thanks.

    fixing into 12mm MDF

Ah, ok, I'll make the lid out of ply, I had planned on oak edge trims anyway. Still think I'll go for some oak dowels in the 'edge grain', they're going to be much stronger than softwood or the mdf, surely.

    fixing into 12mm MDF

Gentles all, sorry if this is a bone question that has been answered before, but.. I've made a box for someone who intends to give it away as a present, It is made from 12mm MR MDF. I need to fix hinges to the top edge to facilitate the lid. I assume that fixing suitable screws into the face of...

Thinking of pulling the trigger on a Clifton 5 1/2

I have a bronze Clifton block plane. It is a joy to use, and is a beautiful looking tool. I got mine from WHeaven, it was an upgrade present from my wife when i wasnt overly delighted with the quangsheng i had bought from them. I'd jump at the chance at any Clifton plane, I'd also try and get to...

    Your Cars

A bit like sideways, my fave was a saab 900i, 4 door, auto. Soooooooo comfortable. 21mpg, I always remember it cornered like a barge, and build quality was unimpeachable. Sideways, did you have the Aero version? Fave fun vehicle was my 1969 LR series 2 88inch. Go anywhere, 18mpg on a run. No...

old glue on Beech table joint

Thanks PC, that was brilliant. Some hot water on it, and after a short period I was able to pull it out with an awl. The softened glue came out like old chewing gum.

old glue on Beech table joint

Folks, I've been asked to sort out this failed joint. Easy enough, but I don't want to break any of the other joints, and that makes clearing out the old glue a bit problematic.. I don't have a chisel thin enough to get into the grooves. The old glue looks like PVA, but I'm not sure. Would...

Designing some side tables, out of comfort zone, input need please!

I understood biscuits to be made of compressed wood, which then expanded back to size once in contact with water based pva? There are anecdotes of them expanding and distorting the timber if they are sited too near the surface of the wood. I've used an axi cutter and lamello biscuits and they've...

    Does anyone else dislike routers?

I have an OF1010. I use it occasionally. I have a disc like cutter for doing biscuits, that gets used a fair bit. I must confess to being a bit wary of them though. I once picked up a cheap cutter I had been using and noticed a small chip had gone from one edge. I did pause for a moment or so...

Hamsterjam, sorry no response earlier., please forgive me. I have enough mounting plates for the lathe, for both sides of the headstock. Thanks, though, for your generous offer.

    bent oak

Sorry if this a piece of trivia, Mod please delete if so, However I thought I'd share this. I'm making an easel for a wedding seating plan (if it goes ahead) out of oak.. The oak is scavenged from an old church communion rail, it must be 40 years old, possibly a bit less. I cut a length of the...

Myford ML8 and general turning questions.

Okeedoke, some off the top of my head for now. The lathe... The tailstock is a millimetre or two out of alignment with the headstock. I understand that this is one of the criticisms of this lathe, but does it matter that much? I'm guessing not., but if I did want to align it better, is this...

Myford ML8 and general turning questions.

Folks I have recently bought a Myford ML8 to try to add turning to the very short list of my woodworking skills. To date I have had some results that I am absolutely delighted with, and others that leave me very disappointed. I have questions about the lathe and its set up, and turning in...

Scaffold pole table legs? Any experience

Cp, I used those black pipe things you refer to for making shelf racking. They look ornate, but the paint finish isn't that durable. I think the trader just gives them a spray over with black top coat, no primer or anything. Scaffold legs are easy to make. Most traders will cut to length for...

    rust-able bracketry

Hiya folks, wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I am making a coffee table cum drinks store for a customer. Using reclaimed timber and going for the rustic/abused look. I want some 6in flat steel corner brackets that I can rust. The only 6in brackets I've found are self...

    Geared sanders eg. Rotex

Well I bit the bullet and bought a Rotex 150. Absolutely delighted with it. It really removes stock, far faster than I thought it would. Agree with you Craig it is a beast to handle in geared mode... deffo need both hands. So I am a happy chap. Thanks all for the various bits of advice

    Geared sanders eg. Rotex

Though I will take a long hard look at a belt sanders as well.. I'd not considered one before.

    Geared sanders eg. Rotex

Thanks to all who replied. On balance it sounds like the Rotex would be worthwhile I use a lot of recovered wood, and getting old hard paint and varnish off can take ages. So I might well go for it, thanks again.
