    Starting to work with metal?

Chris how about getting him to make a simple stationary steam engine to start with this will allow him to get the hang of the machines at school. THIS site has some free plans and even some IC engines which would be interesting. I see you found your way to the model engineering site

    Brownie Points

Not too far as I still had to use some of the machines to prep this lot. I use 4 of the beams for this project as they are approximately 2 1/2" square and 10ft long. Now I need to clean some of the machines as it has gummed some of them up. I have already had a cuppa and a sit down once I...

    Brownie Points

Turning has slowed down for a week or so now as I have been gardening (removing a cherry tree mainly) and repairing a couple of benches which I have just managed to complete. The pile of wood I was given which I spent last week cutting into the correct size and drilling holes. Then over the...

    Distorted eucalyptus - any ideas?

to check that you have enough meat on the bowl to return Measure across the widest inside measurement then compare this to the narrowest part if this measurement runs to the outer edge of the narrowest then you have no chance of returning it, if when measured it leave enough wall thickness then...

    Drilling a hole dead straight

For the centre boss, now that I know what you are turning I would go with CHJ,s method of drilling first and mount between centres. Looks like an interesting project

    Drilling a hole dead straight

If the piece can be turned around then try to drill from both sides if that is possible. What is the wheel for out of interest? Do you have any photos of the part to be drilled

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

I really like the goblet which looks like a brandy glass

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Just to point out something with a chuck this will allow drilling pen blanks on the lathe with the correct set of jaws. This is a better way of drilling the blanks rather than using a drill press

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Personally, I would go with the chuck offer as you can get a cheap grinder and buy tools as you need them. Whichever deal you go for you will still need one of the others at some stage. The chuck is a very useful piece of equipment allowing you to turn bowls and other items, I am sure you will...

    Box and Bowl

I have to agree the dark colouring certainly brought out the grain detail. Like the shape of the oak bowl and box. I like the tall tenon on the box and may use that on some future boxes but may use a contrasting wood for that

    Rounded opening hollow form

I would normally agree Kim but for the two centre burrs I did for my Two Faces piece the technique is dark colour first then rub down leaving the dark colour in the soft grain and sanding back to natural wood before adding the colour of choice(lighter colour)

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

Not very often I say this but for me the lid does not go with the box which I think is great. OK I am on the way out the door Chas

    Spinning Through the Wood Pile

I like the little bowl in the previous post it has an oriental look to it and the two oval boxes in the last post. They should go down well

    Mmmmm - Tools!!!!!!

Very nice Simon. I have the Simon Hope handle and it comes with three different sized collets which means I can use various brands of unhandled chisels. At the moment I have one of my crown revolution shafts in it as I find it so easy to change from one to the other just twist change and twist...

Reinstating my Coronet Major - Maroon model

Depending on what you want to turn can make the difference to the centre height. If you intend to do a lot of hollow forms in the future then 2" above elbow height is ideal

Donut or is it Doughnut chuck designs

A spare faceplete is another way to make the chuck as I did in the post you linked to but mine was one that fitted into my chuck jaws, Axminster sell them for their chucks as well as Robert Sorby for theirs. I find this way quick and easy to install and remove. The one that I showed in my other...

    Two Faced

I could have sworn that I replied to this question. Anyway the answer to that is I used a screw to hold the piece by drilling all the way through with a 3/8" bit so the screw fitted(the Robert Sorby screw that comes with their Patriot Chuck). I could have used a chuck and held it the way you said

    Rounded opening hollow form

This is something that many people find getting the colours or an effect to show up on a photo can be a nightmare. It is like taking a photo and then realising that there is a sanding mark or some other fault that you missed. This is two of the centrepieces that I did for one of my latest...
