another rare, old, collectable, vintage chisel!

I am not convinced that all old was gold. I am sure there were some budget tool horrors available way back then as well. Some of the tat I have found in bootfair boxes just scream rubbish even from the day it was made, back when LLoyd George knew my Grandfather! Yes some excellent tools have...

I would like a new workshop

Isn't it a law as strong as gravity that you always fill the space you have available? Decide which third of your workshop you like, and brick off the other two thirds. You will of course fill the remaining space, but the other two thirds will be empty ( because you emptied it before you built...

£5000? How to get a good return?

Buy some form of standard collectable that you enjoy the ownership of, and not one that is enjoying a fashion hike. You then have the enjoyment of ownership/use and will get a 20% - 30% return and no tax. For me a classic motorbike would be the thing, antiques are too much of a minefield.

Help finding a tool 'tote' bag

The cheapest tool carrier I know of is, look in the usual building site skips and haul out one of those huge emulsion paint tubs, with lid preferably. Spend a happy ten minutes peeling the dried paint off from inside, and then with a felt pen write your name on said tub, plus any dire threats...

" .... and now for something completely different"

I went collage in the Woolston annex of Southampton Technical Collage, which for those of you who don't know was the old Supermarine drawing office, where the Spitfire and its many marks were designed. Our Tutor would show us the marks in the floor where the drawing tables had once stood, and...

    BSA M/C Forks

In the end I did get them to seat properly, it just need a bit of WD40 and a bit more torque, but thanks to your posting I now realise I forgot to grease the rebound springs, so they will need to be dismantled again. Its all good practice. Gareth

    Laura burying her goldfish.

My cats catch live rats for my dog to kill, both are very good at what they do, but I do object when the game is played out in the bedroom.

    Imperial measurement

Use both, 4' 16mm is quite an acceptable way to measure. Thats why tape rules have both systems on them.

    Is this mushroom edible?

A couple of years ago there were two Chinese ladies died here on the Island because they misidentified local mushrooms/toadstools. Most fungi would be edible, the trick is surviving the eating.

    BSA M/C Forks

As its too wet for much else I have been refitting the forks off my 1949 B31, but I seem to have hit a snag. I can only draw the strut about halfway into the top yolk which means the big chrome top nut either doesn't quite reach the top of the strut or will only have about a thread and half to...

    Higgs Boson

foreigners should not be allowed to have anything that may mean they have better weapons than us! If it isn't for WMD, or free energy for ever, I think there are better areas to spend that amount of money.

Never thought I'd say this but ......

Any reason you think it will be better next year? It would appear we now have summer for one to two weeks in March and then the rest of the year is autumn and winter.

    wadkin PK restoration

If a machine has a bit of history its nice to see some of that retaind. The main casting seems in excellent condition only slightly faded, and I like to see details like the shop number 21. You are doing a superb job on the mechanism let the casting reflect that, as its not so scruffy as to look...

Found an interesting thing while cutting through some timber

by 1870 most nations had converted down from approximnately .58" to .45" for their military rounds and had also adopted the more modern style of bullets than the rifled-muskets Minnie' type which was hollow based. A non jacketed bullet of the type shown could easily have been shot into the...

Found an interesting thing while cutting through some timber

Can we get one thing right Shrapnel are the round lead balls found inside a Shrapnel shell, like a flying shot-gun cartridge. The pieces of a shell casing thrown out when it bursts are 'fragment' not Shrapnel. The term has been miss-applied. G
