Little saw in need of TLC

Thanks for the advice, I am ashamed to say that the rusting has happenend on my watch so I should do due penance and restore the wee thing. Gareth

why do this to a plane?

In a previous post I mentioned that I had started playing with an old Marples jack plane, what I didn't mention was that somebody in the past put a 5/16th rabbet down one edge. Any suggestions as to why this may have been done. An I.D. mark perhaps? Gareth

Little saw in need of TLC

I found this little Spear and Jackson in one of my boxes. It is a little sad with the two rust spots shown, the last half inch of the 8" blade having now lost its teeth due to the large spot on the end. Is this little fellow worth salvaging I think I paid 25p for it years ago? With my...

    Advice for getting into Woodwork

Don't forget that You tube has some excellent little vids on the subject, (it also has some dire ones as well) Watching something inspirational always raises the enthusiasm level, as well as keeping the interest up while waiting for items to come or opportunity to practice. Gareth

First time with a wooden plane

I am in the process of making my first bench, and I am using demo' yard salvage with which to make it, as a way of getting my skill levels back without wrecking something decent. Yes it is filled with old cut nails, but only on one face. The timber is about 150 years old being ex Sunday School...

    Stanley 50 verses a Record 050c

Thanks all, perhaps I will look out for a 405. Its not high on the priority list, but always fun to look out for one, and I am well down the slope now, so what the heck. Gareth

    Stanley 50 verses a Record 050c

Whilst sorting out my planes I remembered that I found the handle of my Stanley 50 rather small for my hand, and most of the cutters have turned up missing. So I got to wondering if the scorpion tailed Record 050c would be more comfortable, or are they at the wrong end of Record production to...

I'm over the edge and I didn't know it !

Because I have been forced to move some of my planes from living in a nice warm cupboard in the kitchen, (she's having it rebuilt) to the general direction of my refurbished workshop I thought I would have a count to see what I need to look out for. It came as bit of a shock to discover I...

    Strange old plane

During the war they removed all the wrought iron fencing (12' tall) apart from the section separating the boys from the girls! That metal also proved to be equally useless for munitions, the railings removed from the Isle of Wight were dumped in the Solent. G

    Strange old plane

All those scrap pots and pans had to go somewhere, as they were useless for aircraft. When the Ministry of Supply said they wanted your jam pan for "plane production" the public only assumed it was for Spitfires! Gareth

    need help with measurements

Use both.......... 37"&9mm. I also agree that I wish they would stop teaching centipedes in schools and stick to meters and mil's. G

    The "C Word"

An unused tool is like an unopened toy still in its box, bereft of purpose, and a sad object. I can understand the desire to keep something as original as possible, but it is still an unfulfilled product that is a failure if it is not used. Perhaps it is just me, but I hate those museums which...

    Tesco world domination!

The problem is that without the likes of Tesco and the factory food that is the modern diet a proportion of the country could not afford food at all. The price would go through the roof, because we cannot and have not been able to feed ourselves for some considerable time. The abandond High...

    What is this for?

Thanks Andy Is the pin in the middle the original cutter or would that have different, as mine just comes to a point? Gareth

    What is this for?

As my workshop is slowly rebuilt I am finding long lost tools, or bits I have just aquired over the years. One of them is this little fellow below, it is obviously some form of marking guage, but what exactly would I use it on, or for. The trade mark is E.P.

    anyone here into archery ?

As a family we used to be very keen on the sport. However when we had worked ourselves up to club level we found the regular weekend commitment was just too much. Outdoor on a summer Sunday was wonderful, indoor just brilliant fun. The different disciplines, re-curve, compound, long bow, all...

    Cleaning Old Moulding Planes

It seems I live in the wrong part of the country every moulding plane over here seems to start at £15, as they are all valuable collectiors items. Or so I am told by the stall holders. B***dy EBay! Gareth
