    Help with identification

As it appears to have a top hat section fixed to the side, and due to its slightly curved shape with appearance of rays emitting from the back. I suggest it may be the side from a very early electric fire- 1920's. G

    The future of planes?

No sorry! The wacky world of "Vanity Planes" don't float my boat, but if it is a prototype which in future will lead to a high precession item retailing at £20 I'm all for it, provided they rework the handle/tote to something more user friendly. G

What would you do with 200 hammers ?

A photo of all two hundred would be nice, some of us have never seen two hundred hammers. Although if you were late arriving at my old sheet metal shop, eighty odd blokes would hammer on their benches to announce your late arrival. You tended to be "hammered in" only once. G

    Another mystery tool!

Sheet metal tool, I suspect it would cause tearing on wood. I have three in my shed.

What would you do with 200 hammers ?

Like most tools there is a vast range of hammer types many to specific jobs that would be very specialised, and this day and age hard to get and expensive if you can

Is there a market for scrap tools?

There used to be a charity that refurbished tools for the third world, but they didn't want junk. The items had to have usable life in them, but there does come a time when even the oldest general tool has to go back to the melting pot. G

    Show stoppers

Yes, I can't believe just how massive the old plane blades were, and the little Tyzack dovetail saw just nestles in the hand. I will try and find a a set of moseley blades for the plough plane, but if they are not forthcoming, a harlequin set will have to do. G

    Show stoppers

I brought these home from a local village show, a John Moseley plough plane with sadly with only 1 blade (no8), and a nice little Tyzack & Turner saw. Gareth

    Why so long?

Because the results have to confirmed by two people, one of whom should be a consultant, the results then have to be typed up. Also you probably were not the only soul x-rayed that day, so there will be more than your notes for the staff to deal with, but when that is achieved it should be...

Oh dear, should I clean this plane?

I think that is quite remarkable. There can be very few trades where you can pick up a tool that is at least 150 years old, and provided you have sharpened it correctly and have sufficient wit, you can confidently expect it to do the job it was made to perform. That certainly isn't the case...

Oh dear, should I clean this plane?

I have found a makers name it appears to be Archer of 45 Goodoe St. Should that be Stormont Archer I wonder? G

Oh dear, should I clean this plane?

Thanks all, I will leave the teak oil in the can, and follow advice. Gareth

Oh dear, should I clean this plane?

I had another good look at the plane, and realised the dust is probably from an non-existent extraction system. So that has already gone. I might try a little light rub with some teak oil, as that is what I have in stock, but aren't those old blades massive. The blade is a Marples, but I can...

Oh dear, should I clean this plane?

I have just acquired this wooden 22" jointer plane, but it is covered in the dust of ages and looks wonderful, almost as if it has just been put down by its master. I got it to use, but the more I look at it with its covering of dust, the more I like it as it is, not using it however would seem...
