    Hasty Christmas presents

A week before Christmas, daughter in the USA requested a pair of pitch pine finials, to grace a pitch pine bed frame which her husband has yet to make. The reclaimed piece of pitch pine that came to hand gave rise to a lot of 6mm offcuts, so the idea of a parquetry tray appealed to her. The odd...

    Interesting bit of wood

Sorry about repeat of pic of bark; I'm out of practice on this forum!

    Interesting bit of wood

Our local botanic garden saves itself some money on disposal of greenwaste by allowing members of its Friends organisation to remove any timber fellings/thinnings. Some time last year I picked up a load for firewood and left it to dry. Cut up one of the lengths yesterday and was surprised at...

    Site activity diminished?

Haven't been posting, or even reading much here since the new design. I like to read things as in a book, so find the loss of the old next/previous topic buttons worse than infuriating. In effect, it's like having a book where to turn the page (or at least to go to the next chapter) you are...

    Making kitchen doors or buy

Shaker doors seem to have fallen out of fashion lately, so a lot of the "must have the latest fashion" brigade are having them torn out and replaced. SO.... there's a lot advertised on Gumtree, Ebay and the like. Quite likely to find something that is at least a good enough match. That's how...

    Woodworkers in Wales

+1 for the Penn book, a wonderful and inspiring read. Long time since I used to have to visit South Wales for work, but it's a lovely area and it's a great project you are undertaking.

    Boot Pull

Looks good, but no way could that be made for the price. Probably doesn't even cover cost of the materials in the UK.

    Making Crittall doors in wood

Any mileage in glazing with polycarbonate?

    Screws snapped inside blank

Bob, you just don't recognise the depth of my cheapskatery! :D But there was actually a more sensible reason for suggesting something roughed out of tube, which is depth of cut. All my plug cutters have very limited depth of cut, which might not be enough to get down to the end of the broken...

    Workshop heating

Presumably it's still possible to buy (or even find offered on Freegle?) storage heaters? If the OP has an off-peak tariff, then running an appropriately sized storage heater will maintain a fairly uniform temperature without the costs of peak time electric heating. Ran one in my last, fairly...

Black and Decker matrix. Don't scoff just yet.......

Surprising (or perhaps it isn't!) how often those B&D "accessories" still show up in charity shops, usually still in original packaging! To me it suggests they were actually quite well made, out of metal rather than plastic, but fundamentally limited in useability.

    Electrical Die grinder 6mm capacity

Did try briefly using the body of one of the old detachable Bosch routers in that way, but didn't find it very effective. Maybe with practice...... If you are brave, of course, there are the Arbotech blades for an angle grinder, which will take off stock (and probably fingers. toes or other...

    Screws snapped inside blank

Glad you got it sorted. For next time(!) you could always make an adequate plug cutter by forming saw teeth on the end of an appropriately sized metal tube.

    Claymore (Brian)

Oh dear. So sad for you and your father. Always had fear of offspring dying before me. It's also a salutary warning that flu is not to be trifled with. Keep strong.

    Sensitivity to wood dust

Probably doesn't work, but have seen mention of techniques for desensitisation. SWMBO used to have really severe reaction to some insect bites and we were going to follow up on this stuff, but since we moved to Scotland, the sensitivity has almost completely disappeared, for no obvious reason.

Help needed finding startrite 325 single phase bandsaw

Since the 3p motor is a standard foot-mounted jobbie, its easy and cheap(ish) to get a replacement 1p version and you can even "bodge" the nvr switch to work with it. (Ok, purists throw up your hands in horror, but my 352 worked like that for several years before it got the proper switch). If...

    Turning Deer Antler

Just to reiterate the point about stink and dust. If it's a "found" antler, then it's potentially more than just a nuisance, as heaven knows what pathogens could be growing in/on the antler. Wear a VERY well fitting mask, and wash well after hadling.

PLEASE HELP if you use Good Brothers Timber (Leominster)

Used them fairly regularly and they were really great, BUT that must have been at least 35 years ago! So if they are still in business, they must be doing something right.

    furniture wood identification

Not to my taste, but there look to be some usefully sized panels on all the pieces. If they are indeed veneered on to blockboard, you'd have ultra-stable material that with a bit of ingenuity could make something nice in the furniture line

    deWalt help

Thanks, Skelph, but if you look, they are just like all the other parts suppliers and only sell the whole unit for £70, which is a lot more than you pay for complete, albeit, used drills. On top of which, they are distinctly unhelpful if you contact them. Rude, even!
