Where has all the sand gone?

Our local quarry (Lovies) has all anyone could need and is happy to supply direct into your trailer. Only problem is the guy driving the big Volvo loader isn't that good at judging weight. I once asked for 1/2 tonne; he tipped, and I had to pay for, the best part of a tonne. Useful, except...

    Bicycles

Gave in to the years, and bought Kalkhoff e-bikes for self and spouse. But still got a Dawes Galaxy and Muddy Fox MTB. The latter is handy because it's light and can be slung into the boot of the car for short journeys away from parking. The others are just too long/heavy to be easy to...

    Wood mallet

That is fantastic work. Takes me back to my Herefordshire youth, when we were doing that sort of stuff (but for stockproofness, so much more rough and ready). According to dialect, such a hedge should be "horse high, bull strong and pig tight". Which is why I get cross having moved up to...

    Holly tree?

Have tried in the past, and had problems with some sort of greyish staining despite doing all the right things. But if you want a really nice, if a bit featureless, wood for turning, it's well worth saving particularly in the size you quote which must be pretty rare.

Getting things 3D printed in the UK

There used to be a place in Aberdeen called Hackspace, which was a sort of communal workshop space with 3d printers and other similar kit, used by knowledgeable people who were keen to show off their skills and impart them to newcomers. Apparently there were similar places scattered around the...

    Valuation question

Just a query - is it the standard 3/4" spindle? Some Majors were made with 7/8" spindles, which were more appropriate to the loads a Major could take, but of course a pig when it came to buying chucks. If it's in as good condition as it looks, I'd suggest £500 was a bare minimum, but given the...

    Best handle wood?

Given the prevalence of ash dieback, would have thought green ash would be flooding the market! Of the woods readily available in UK, would be loth to use anything BUT ash for handle on a big hammer. As others have said, it's a complex balance between springiness, non-brittle strength and...

Things you don't see every day

I knew this guy was about, as he(?) had lolloped across the garden a couple of months before, but then he appeared one evening helping himself from the (red) squirrel feeder. A few weeks later, his pal was there too! Haven't seen them for a while, and the squirrels are once more getting their...

    Old British Bandsaws

About 11 inches and b****y heavy

    Miniature Traction Engine

Have a feeling that my Fluxite tin actually had the price printed on the tin, in shillings and pence, as a permanent part of the label. Inflation must have been low then!

    Old British Bandsaws

Dunno if it counts, but bought my Startrite 352 secondhand twenty plus years ago and it's probably the best tool in the workshop.

    Thread to Taper Adapter

Don't suppose it would be the right thread, but if you only need to put a drill type chuck on there, Picador used to make one with a female thread to screw on to their saw shaft. No idea if Picador even still exist.

    Dust rant

Agree up to a point, but there is some distinction to be made between factual (well, they'd claim to be factual) programmes where folk are doing things, wrongly IMHO, which the viewer might then do, and usually fictional sequences which most people should find offensive, but which they are...

    Dust rant

Two TV programmes which I try to watch are the Repair Shop on BBC and Salvage Hunters - the restorers on whatever it is. While both show some very impressive work, both the title sequences really annoy me. In each case, a pile of fine dust is shown on a surface and then blown towards the...

    Tapping plexiglass

Depends how big is the hole! And you will have a job finding a tap of <1/2" diameter that will create a thread 3 inches long.

    Mig or Tig?

Interesting. I'd heard odd mentions of the advantages of them, but had tried to ignore it so as not to be tempted to spend more of my pension! Your reply was really good in reminding me things that I probably did know, but had not really absorbed into practice. The guy who taught me to weld...

    Mig or Tig?

It's YEARS since I did a welding course, and really haven't used either Mig or MMA much recently. But would be interested to know from you professionals why striking the MMA arc gets more difficult the lower the amperage set? With an ancient oil-cooled Oxford, it's pretty much impossible for me...

Ive solved the Wellington Boots and Sock problem

Had forgotten the smell - yes, it was lovely. The other smell from my youth was sugarbeet pulp in hessian sacks. Could spend ages just sniffing them! Interesting the comment about using baling wire for small bales in Greece. The old stationary baler the thresher man brought round to do the...

Ive solved the Wellington Boots and Sock problem

Where do you even get baler twine these days? All my neighbours use round balers with plastic net wrap. My supply of Red Star BINDER twine (who else remembers that?) is rapidly dwindling! Dunno what the big Hesston square balers use, but it must be strong.
